It's hard for me to say since when I first went on the name brand glucophage I was also working more on me ... exercise, sort of following sugag busters... I lost weight, had periods, hair grew on my head, body hair lessened... then I switched to the generic and poof. Everything went back to the way it was. I went up in dose, never got regular cycles again, did get pregnant twice though on my own... but really never felt like the generic worked as well. But was it really the generic or not me making as much effort? Hard to say. I've sworn off fertility treatments ever again and I'm skeptical of metformin so we'll see what hard work alone does for me... I'm getting back into using an elliptical after over a year of not using one. (I rode an exercise bike while pregnant with my girls but don't feel it was as good a work-out... and have been pretty lazy since having them... but now have a home machine and am using it and boy am I in LOUSY shape...)
At any rate at one point my insurance gave me the choice of name brand or generic and when I requested name brand, the pharmacist was like "You know it will be cheaper for generic" (I think it was a $10 vs $30 copay or something) and I said yeah but the generic doesn't work - and she said she'd had a few other patients say the same thing, the generic wasn't controlling their blood sugars as well.
So I don't know. Lots of factors. All I know is met is not the miracle I'd hoped for when I first read of it - but I don't know if it's the met or me, or both.

We never talk of our lacking relationships
And how we're guilt-stricken, sobbing, with our heads on the floor
We fell through the ice when we tried not to slip..."
