Default Now 'hyper' after 9 years! Anyone had success with natural thyroid boosting supps?

I was dx'd hypothyroid 1996. No matter what I do I have always felt pretty lousy in a hypothyroid type of way even after losing 50 lbs a couple of years ago!

Most recent test results are:

TSH < 0.014 (0.35 - 4.5)
T4 28.2 (11.0 - 26.0)

I don't have free T3 or free T4 as my doc refuses to test this. I was on 150mcg of thyroxine for last 7 years but now have to reduce to 125mcg. I am very excited as this is what I have been working towards for many years without success before. However I am also a bit scared as I cut down to 125mcg in November last year (my own decision not based on blood results) and felt great for one month and then crashed badly - it took 3 months to recover!

I am hoping to try a natural thyroid boosting supplement such as Thyax as I cannot get a prescription for T3 (in UK) and I understand that this can boost T4 to T3 conversion naturally. I still have some hypothyroid symptoms and also some hyperthyroid symptoms now which is very confusing. Has anyone else successfully taken one of these thyroid boosting supplements and been able to come off synthetic thyroid hormones? That is my ultimate aim.

I would love to hear your comments please.

Thanks ladies,

Nikki x

If you've lost weight, this could be why you need a lower doseage of medication. Your medication needs vary with your weight.

I'm not certain about thyax but I do know that you can indeed get a prescription for T3. I know many people in the UK who are on armour thyroid or its generic equivalent, which contains T3 medicine as well as T4. If you go to the about.com thyroid board here:

http://forums.about.com/ab-thyroid/

You can find people in the UK who could give you tips on how to get armour.

I've heard that taking natural thyroid supplements (which don't contain actual thyroid hormone) can aggravate thyroid conditions over time because they end up overstressing the thyroid gland.
