I have to give a big Thumbs Up for my daughters nutritionist. We just got back from her appointment today and I'm feeling a whole range of emotions from anger to sadness and happiness all jumbled. The nutritionist (Dawn) was the first one to even consider the fact that my daughter might have PCOS. She is 12 years old now and been going to see Dawn for almost 3 years now. Dawn knew that even if she had suggested it 3 years ago we would not have been able to get a diagnosis from any doctor at that time because of her age.
We got talking today about PCOS being hereditary and I told her that Brittany and I are both going to the OB/GYN next week because I feel that I may have PCOS also. She looked at me, and in her quirky way asked "what was your first clue"? Like she had known all along....lol.
The more we talked the more convinced I am that I have PCOS as well as Brittany. I never thought about the fact that just before I got pregnant with Brittany almost 13 years ago that I was on BC pills and had lost 65 lbs. I actually got pregnant while on the pill. Dawn said that may have happened because the BC pills were making my system regular again. After I had Brittany, I had my tubes tied and did not need the BC pills anymore so I have not taken them since. Of course, my AF has never been regular either, only when I was on the pills.
I have no where near the amount of hair on my arms and back that Brittany has, but on my lip, chin and sideburns I feel like I am plucking daily to remove what I can. I have hypothyroidism, migraines, take an antidepressant, am very overweight, have never had regular AF unless I was on the pill, and am so frustrated because my primary physician said just go to an OB because she has no idea what tests to have run and/or what to do with the results.
My mother is so happy that I am finally trying to find out if PCOS is my problem, because she has thought that I have had it for years.
I did get a copy of all Brittanys test results and I am going to compare them to the link that I found for test result findings and what they mean. Guess I am going to have to find me a new Primary Physician that knows something about PCOS and really get the ball moving after I go to the OB on the 17th.
Thanks for listening to all of this....If anyone has any advice please contact me here or on yahoo. I am Brittanys_mom_1994 on yahoo and am on there most of the time.
((((((((((HUGS))))))))))) to everyone.

Brittany is lucky to have such a great Mum (sorry - English!) as well as a fab nutritionist. I look forward to hearing about her journey to better health. It is so important to kick PCOS from a young age.

You sound so excited that I can't help but be excited for you. I do have a suggestion, if you and her haven't alreay been tested, I would request a test for Insulin Resistance. A lot of women with PCOS are also dx with IR. Some ppl claim it's one step away from type 2 diabeties. But once you learn about it, you can learn how to live with it. Just like PCOS.
If you ever need someone to talk to, feel free to pm me anytime!
Just got home from the OB's office. They are sending both Brittany and I for ultrasounds. Both of us for a long list of bloodwork. Mine includes, CBC Hemogram, FSH, LH, Thyroid Panel, Fasting Glucose, Gest screen Glucose, Blood Lead, FBS, DHEAS?, Free Testosterone, Fasting Insulin...and some more i cant understand.
The Midwife told me that since I am past childbearing (had my tubes tided) that there really isnt much they can do for me if I have PCOS other than birth control pills if I want them. But I guess she is waiting on the IR result before anything else for the Met if she gives it to me.
Brittanys half sister, from her father, who is older, went today also. This was her first visit to an OB and they are having both girls tested for PCOS. Brittany has SO MUCH more hair than her sister all over her body, now we are thinking that she may have gotten double whammied from both her father and I.
I guess I feel better, knowing that at least we are getting somewhere. Just sort of confused that the midwife told me there wasn't much she could do for me. I just want to know for sure and get some confirmation of what I have been thinking and feeling for all these years.
Thanks for letting me rant a little.

It can be frustrating to hear from your midwife/doc that there is not much they can do to help you. Since most midwives focus on pregnancy and childbirth, she may not have much experience with PCOS Tx, and so she doesn't know what else to offer.
Don't feel hopeless. There are some things that you can do to treat your PCOS even though you are not trying to conceive.
It might be in your best interest to find a doc that is more familiar with PCOS Tx options.
In the meantime, you can try some things that have seemed to help others with PCOS: look into doing a low carb diet, doing an exercise program, or even checking out some alternatives on the "alternatives" message board.
What about your nutritionist? What kind of practice does she do? Does she know about herbs, and alternatives? She might be able to tell you about some of the alternative Tx options that are available.

Brittany and I went for our sonograms today. They are marking her as suspected PCOS because they did find cysts on her ovaries. Me of course I started AF this morning. They did a regular sonogram and then also did an internal sonogram. I guess they got better pictures from the regular one than the internal. (Said that I had to much in my bowels to get a clear picture). Still not convinced that I have PCOS and they want to wait till my bloodowrk comes back. (I go get that done this weekend).
I'm wondering if I should ask to have another sonogram done in a few weeks, since I just started AF, and arent the cysts larger when you are ovulating or at that point in your cycle, rather than when you have AF?
I'm starting to get really depressed about all this. I was just soooo sure that I had PCOS too. (I know I should wait for the dr's to see my blood work and check me again for cysts). But it is just soooo frustrating waiting and wondering and second guessing the doctors around here.
Thanks for letting me rant again.

You are a great mom...maybe here's some ideas that will help you.
Just because your tubes have been tied and you don't show ovarian cysts don't rule out PCOS! And don't let the doctor tell you there's nothing to be done. I'm past childbearing age and my ovaries now look ok. (had PCOS cysts in the past, however.) I started Met about 6 months ago. I've felt big change in my energy level and saw a big improvement in my skin. Also, make an effort to watch what you eat (you're already doing this with your daughter, most likely) and exercise...if nothing else, it sets a good example for your DD.
When did you start seeing the PCOS symptoms in your daughter? I have a ten year old, and am pretty convinced she's going to have problems. Did you start your DD on a special diet before puberty? What did the nutritionist tell her? And, did your DD want to eat differently? My DD is such a sugar junkie (even though she sees me struggle with this daily). I'm really worried about her. Would love to find a way to jolt her out of her bad eating habits before things get worse. I worry that she seems to really crave and need the sugar and is perhaps already insulin resistant and is just trying to give her body what it needs to keep going.
When did i start seeing signs of PCOS in my daughter? She started getting hair in her privates when she was about 5. We took her to an endo then and had her tested for Precosious Puberty which they ruled out, but they did nothing more than that. She started her AF when she was just 10. She has had LOTS of hair on her arms, her face and her back, plenty of acne on her back, she has had a problem with her weight since she was about 5 also. She was a normal kid before that, always wearing cute little outfits, but when she started Kindergarten we had to start finding larger clothes and altering them for her.
About 3 years ago my ex tried to sue me for custody of our daughter because of her weight. He said I wasn't doing enough to try and help her lose weight. We all started seeing a nutritionist and she has been "maintaining" her weight, not going up, but not able to lose either. I know I still overeat sometimes and yes I crave alot of sweets. My daughter did not want to eat differently....it has been very hard. I am trying to help her with something that is going to help her for the rest of her life and all she does is complain. She hates to get on the treadmill for 30 minutes everyday even though it is in front of the TV so she can watch it.
OK....just got off the phone with the OB's office....now i'm really confused. The Sonogram tech said that Brittany has cysts on her ovaries (or what looked like cysts I guess) and they were putting in the report that she is suspected PCOS, but now the midwife says that her bloodwork "all came back normal" so she does not PCOS. The sonogram and the bloodwork have to both agree or else she does not have PCOS. I just want to sit here and cry. I dont know what more to do for my daughter. This morning she started AF again after only 3 weeks. She got it 1/3/07, had it for 10 days, then was clear for 11 days and now has it again. We are making an appointment with her GP because he is the one who ordered that the sonogram be done, maybe he will want us to change OB's...I dont know.....

Oh cyster, I feel for you and all you're going through. :Hugs:
I was happy to read that you're planning to talk to your GP about possibly switching gyn's. You can have PCOS without having cystic ovaries! And several cysters I know have normal labs but were diagnosed because of their symptoms. Personally, my results don't really "match", since I have polycystic ovaries but generally normal labs. (Except for being IR).
I had symptoms similar to your daughter's, I started AF at age 11, and it was always heavy and full of clots, and I had bad cramps with it. I've struggled with my weight for about as long as I can remember! My hair started thinning around puberty and that's when I began what I now recognize as depression. I think of my PCOS as kind of "dormant" for several years after that, until after the birth of my second son, when it got really bad. I had periods for weeks on end, then I'd skip them for months. Sometimes I would have only a few days in between, like your daughter is. I feel for what she is going through.
Don't know if this will help, but I thought I'd share with you that I've been taking cinnamon capsules for a few months now, and since I started, my carb cravings have reduced significantly and my period has been coming every 28-30 days! My cholesterol went down and my A1C was normal (I'm IR and type 2 diabetic). I'll look up the cinnamon thread that I post at and give it to you.
Hang in there, you are doing so much for your daughter, while trying to take care of yourself too! Please feel free to PM me anytime.
Hugs
Jenny

I got a call from our midwife/OB about 5 pm tonight. She said that they finally got ALL of Brittanys test results back and that some of them are now questionable. They are now leaning toward a diagnosis of PCOS for her. They also want her to see an Endo, which we already have an appointment for. I explained to her that it has been an uphill battle trying to find an Endo who will even see her, let alone treat her or have tests run because of her age.
I am going to have my blood work done in the AM tomorrow. I am not even going to call to find out the results of my tests for 2 weeks....that is gonna be hell....but i dont want to go through this stupid rollercoaster ride again with my test results.
Thank you for all the support and gifts everyone....and I will look at that link for the cinnamon tomorrow when I get home and have some time to myself. Keeping my fingers crossed....
