Lightbulb This is nutty, I thought Prednisone CAUSED my PCOS?!?

Odd, I have been reading around the boards that alot of ladies are taking Prednisone as an anit-androgen. When I was a kid and in my early teens to about the first year of college I was being injected with steroids for my asthma. Also, If I had a particulary bad asthmatic episode I would take high does of it, like 100 mgs a day. I had weirdo peroids since I started but only started showing hairyness etc when I was 19 or so. So I assumed it was the Prednisone (steroid..male hormone...prednisone...steroid...you get what I mean..) I did notice when I was on it long enough I would get my peroid. So my question is what does Prednisone do for PCOS? Although I probably wouldn't take it because I hate its side effects (Moon Face, bloat and for some reason makes me angry..lol) but I am curious. TIA

I don't know much about the effects of prednisone on PCOS but I do know that prolonged use of steroids can cause very elevated cortisol levels and cushings which mimics PCOS. Just a suggestion that if you have never been properly tested for cushings (3 separate 24hour urine analysis) then you should be especially after prolonged use of the steroid

I'm on dexamethasone (which I've read is similar to prednisone) to bring down a slightly elevated DHEA level. I've read that prednisone can also be used for this reason but most of the people I've talked to are on dex. I'm on a really, really low dose (.5 mg every other day) and haven't noticed any s/e from it. HTH .

Prednisone is indeed a steroid, but it is not an anabolic steroid (ones used in athletes to enhance performance). It is also prescribed to treat Hormonal disorders, arthiritis, severe lupus, Crohns diesease, as well as severe arthritis & Asthma.

Prednisone given in high doses can cause the following:

· acne,
· increased hair growth,
· thinning of the skin,
· cataracts,
· glaucoma,
· osteoporosis,
· roundness of the face, and
· changes in behavior

Sounds like you were effected by the high dosage of Prednisone yu were prescribed. 100mg/day is lot. How long were u taken prednisone? My daughter has severe asthma and takes prednisone only when her asthma cannot be controlled by nebulizer alone..15mg/day over the course of 5 days.
