Default O/T Question about my Dad

Hi Everyone
Thanks for taking the time to read and respond

My dad was diagnosed with diabetes a in the winter and was put on Metformin, he still eats the same but has lost alot of weight and is very bony.

Is this normal when your blood sugars level out and remain stable, I mean to get skinny while still eating the same thing ?

He was very very grumpy before being diagnosed and got better but has now started to get grumpy again ?

I dunno he is 50 and I am kinda concerned

Thanks for any help
Amy

What has his doctor said? If he's changed his eating because of the diagnosis, it may just be a natural weight loss. One of the men I teach with got the diagnosis, started watching everything he put into his mouth, and lost a considerable amount of weight. However, sudden weight loss is also part of the diabetes diagnosis, so I really don't know. Hopefully someone else may have more information to give you.

Well, weight loss is one of the potential side effects of taking Metformin. It's doubtful that the weight loss is from diabetes itself, since that only happens when blood sugar is uncontrolled. If there is a concern about too much weight loss, and the doc determines that it is because of the Metformin, he/she can switch your dad to a different insulin sensitizing med such as Avandia or Actos (or evaluate other possible causes, since unexplained weight loss should always be investigated).

I lost about 42lbs when i was on 2G of Metformin.. because it gave me diarrhea for weeks at a time and made me not want to eat.. I was cut down to 1G a day and had Gliclazide added in. After a while this didnt work and i went onto insulin and the 1G of Met.. I am now on 4 shots a day and the Met, it still has an effect on my body and makes me feel sick but without it i have a harder time controlling my sugars.

As for grumpyness, i know when i go low i get agitated and can come over as grumpy but i dont always realise that i have got to that stage.. when i begin to shake then i know i am low..

Maybe it would be a good idea to get him checked out again, it wouldnt hurt to be on the safe side.
