Default Obesity help on NHS

Has anyone had any help with excercise and diet from the NHS?

I am obese and have not mananged to lose any weight on my own for years. My endo says that my daily walking and swimming regime is just not enough. I added the gym to this routine for a year still with no change, in fact I got fatter ( it defifinitely wasn't muscle!).
What I need is a personal trainer to study what I am doing and a nutritionist to look at how and what I am eating. I can't afford either (which is why I max out on the free excercise) I now have hip damage and am finding walking distances at speed very difficult, so am going to try my luck at cycling.

I am wondering if anyone in the UK has managed to get referred to any nutrition or excercise specialists on the NHS.

Hi I have seen dieticians who have given me advice about losing weight. I think you can just ask your GP to refer you to a dietician.

My GP refferred me to a dietician years ago, but I didn't really take the help on offer back then...

I have my diabetic review next month and I was discussing with my nurse
a couple of months ago about using a personal trainer on this excercise programme but it was over the other side of town and I didn't want to travel...

But since I am driving now I am gonna ask for a refferral over there next month with her!

What's that thing called where the GP can prescribe you gym membership, or whatever, on the NHS? I'm sure I heard summat about it a year ago. But I forgot what it was called so I can't Google it...?

Hi my GP prescribed me gym memebership but I think it was done in conjunction with a nearby gym- basically gave me 1 month free with a personal trainer - but after the one month you are left to your own devices again!
I lost some weight whilst doing this but but never kept it up as to be perfectly honest I HATE the gym! I hate the mirrors and the air conditioning and the whole atmosphere. Would much rather go for a walk with fresh air and changning scenery. Just my opinion though.

Yeah I hate the gym too, but I need a personal trainer's advice. I walk, swim and cycle and it does nothing. I need someone to give me expert advice ( although I 'm not sure you get that at your average gym!)
I'll ask around and see if any gyms do the kind of deal you mention, thanks for that info

I think they are just trying to pass papers on it now. Its the health MOT. I think its really basic though.
For some reason I thought that obese people already could get gym memberships on the NHS. In my area kids and OAP's can swim for free. It drives me nuts that I have to pay a lot of money when I have a medical condition and if I just sat on my butt I would end up costing the NHS a whole load more!
end rant

Thanks for the information regarding dieticians. I am amazed I have never been refered to one before. i wonder if its because I always take food diaries and what I eat looks to be right. Maybe the NHS doesn't give that much detailed help other than here's a few ideas.
I want someone to regularly test my blood to see what certain routines do to me.

I have been referred to 2 dieticians since I struggled with my weight.

The 1st one didn't have a clue about PCOS and when I told her what I ate/exercised, basically she said I must be lying as I would have lost weight.

The 2nd one specialised in PCOS and was wonderful

If you do get refered it may be worth asking if there's someone with knowledge of PCOS and the diets/regimes that work best for them.

Default Hey Flubby ...

Hi, I've had similar issues with weight and exercise as you, and last Thursday I started on something called Reductil. It's a one-a-day tablet that supposedly reduces the appetite within the brain, and my dose is 15mg.

I have been very conscious now of how much I am eating each meal, and haven't overdone it but at the same time I haven't felt hungry either.

Why not try asking your GP if you can have a go with it, taking the slant that it might be enough to give yourself a jump start in your weight loss. Worth a try?!?

Best wishes,

Stedders

I can't take Reductil because of high blood pressure, it can have a lot of nasty side effects!

I don't need to eat less though stedders, although if there was a pill that made porridge taste like lots of delicious things I would be interested
I have tried weight loss drugs though. My endo gave me xenical ( the fat eliminator) even though I wasn't eating any fat other than chicken breasts. He thought it might make a bit of a difference. Man oh man there must be a lot of fat left in reduced fat chicken breasts! Boy was I ill!!!! Didn't lose any weight though!
I'm glad reductil is working for you. I know in the past I have slowed myself down by eating too large a portion of food without realising it.
