There really isn't a difference between the two. The best advice I can give you is to check out each laboratory and research the ingredients which are present to make both pills. See what the differences are between the active and inactive ingredients. I know Barr Laboratory makes the generic (Ocella) and I think Bayer is the manufacturer of (Yasmin).

Yes, Ocella is manufactured by Barr and Yasmin is manufactured by Bayer. The active ingredients of both are exactly the same: drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol 3mg/0.03 mg. I haven't looked into the inactive ingredients of either of them. I haven't noticed anything different now that I'm on Ocella.

@ Jetslove

I didn't experience that when my AF left me. You should see your Dr. and document this experience.

I decided to start Ocella last month when I was out of insurance and found out that the price of Yasmin had increased 20 dollars since a generic was now out. I ended up paying close to 60 dollars for the Ocella, and I regret not spending the extra money for the name-brand Yasmin. I had previously used Yasmin for a very long time and had absolutely no problems. For the first three weeks of taking Ocella, I had pain in the abdomen, along with nausea, major depression/crying fits (despite being on 20mg of Lexapro and 1mg of Klonopin) and just a general ill feeling. I told my psychiatrist in week two that the anti-depressants weren't working anymore. He asked if I had changed anything, and at the time, I totally forgot I had changed from Yasmin to Ocella. I didn't even think this would be a problem anyways since I was told Ocella was the same as Yasmin. After getting two migraine headaches and severe abdominal pain during the week of my period, I ended up going to a doctor. A few days later, I ended up in the ER because I could not stand the pain anymore. After a vaginal ultrasound, they said the pain was caused by small cysts on my right ovary which were bursting every now and then and causing blood to build up, which was causing the pain. I immediately went back to Yasmin and now, besides having some abdominal pain, I am otherwise fine. I will never ever take Ocella again after that horrible month of pain and depression. I can't believe the company is selling Ocella without doing proper testing first. Apparently, several other women have had problems with Ocella too and I regret ever switching. I know PCOS causes these cysts, but the BC pills are supposed to help stop them. It seems like the Ocella caused more of them, thus causing the pain. I will forever be leary of taking generics. Some women may not have problems, but I just want to warn others to be careful, and to remember it's probably Ocella causing some extra side effects if you just started taking it and are feeling crappy. I emailed the company on Thursday and have not heard back yet. I hope to get the word out about this pill. Others who have problems should also email the company so they get the point. By the way, for those of you who don't know, Bayer and Barr are one company. They work together under different names--so it doesn't matter which one you complain to. I'd be interested to know if others have had similar problems that have cause them to end up in the ER or in a doctor's office with these similar side effects.

Hey ladies, just an update, I'm on the 3rd day of my nonactive pills for the 2nd month on Ocella and Metformin. I'm now awaiting my visit from AF and to begin the 3rd month on this pill.

Blinky1021: Thanks for actually being proactive and submitting to Barr and Bayer Labs your complications due to the meds. Is this your first day on the boards? I see it's your first post and you seem to be a new member as of this month! Welcome to the boards!

I start the Placebo pills for my 1st pack of Ocella on Sunday. I haven't had any problems so far. I have had a pain in my side though. Has anybody experienced this? I don't know if it is because of the Ocella or something else. The first time I noticed it, it last about 3 days and then it went away. It came back today, but only for a few hours. I don't think it has anything to do with my ovaries because it is up too high. It is actually where my rib cage is.

Default Stupid Question...

Did your doc have to give you something to make you bleed before you could start taking Ocella? Or did you just start taking the Ocella and it eventually started your periods up again??

Just wondering...Im looking at possibly going back on the pill, and if I were to, I think this one will be it. My weight is just spiraling out of control and the oily skin is returning now that im not nursing my sons anymore...I got one period, but that was 2 months ago, now nothing. Stupid PCOS!!!

I actually started Yasmin before Ocella was available, but when I started I hadn't had a period for a few months, and I hadn't had a regular period in a few years. My dr. gave me the prescription and told me to start on Sunday. Three weeks later, I got my period right on schedule with the placebo pills, I have had one almost every month since then and that I was 21 months ago. I actually have lost weight since starting it, too. I have been working at losing weight, but this pill didn't seem to prevent me or make it any harder. My skin has also cleared up a lot, I get compliments on it all the time.

Ocella and Yaz/Yasmin are not from the same company. Ocella is a product of Barr where YAZ and Yasmin are from Bayer.

I am not a person who goes crazy over meds or demands brand over generic. I take what the pharmacy gives and what my insurance covers. However, I feel like I am losing my mind on Ocella. (Yes, I have given it a chance). I first assumed stress was causing me to be emotional and a bit irrational. I am not usually a erratic person and I don't post on websites but this experience has been awful. In addition to the erratic moods, I have experienced fatigue alternating with restlessness, breakouts, pains (that feel like ovarian cysts are exploding), nausea, confusion, shooting pain in my right leg, I have lost feeling in part of my right foot and have lost some sensation in my right leg. I feel like I am losing my mind and I hate that I am venting in an open forum but no one else seems to understand. For those of you who are not experiencing symptoms, count yourself blessed. For those who might be reading this and thinking that those of us who are having symptoms are imagining them please ignore the urge to say that it is imagined because the symptoms make me at least feel crazy enough. I go to the doctor tomorrow.

Called the dr office today. After being on Yaz for almost 2 months and bleeding for over 6 weeks of that, I stoped taking it. Here I am 3 weeks later and no bleed! That was a horriable 6+ weeks. I requested to be on the generic. I have to wait for my cycle. Hopefully I'll start by the end of the week. They said I had to give at least 2 weeks though. They will do a Beta if I don't start. As long as that's neg. (oh I so hope so, dd just turned 1, lol) I can start the generic. Maybe then I can start to be normal again.

I'm on my 3rd week of Ocella.. started to have Dizzy spells, and Crankyyyyy, and nauseous once in a while. I've read alot of negative things about Ocella, but everybody's different. I'm getting off Ocella and going to switch to something different.

Have you had any side effects yet this month?
