Hi,
This is totally off topic but I was kind of hoping that anyone here who is either at uni, been to uni or is in the same boat as me might have some advice to share? as Im getting a little worried/desperate! I`ve just sat my AS levels and got my results and its now dawned on me that I have a year until I go to uni (I want to study English and History). Im really struggling with writing my pesoanl statement and was wondering if anyone could offer some advice..... or anything? Im like first generation so no one at home knows how to help and I have to apply before January. And im a little lost! So I thought id appela to the girls here, hopefully someone can help.
Please, love,
Frankie x
I'm sorry I don't have much help to offer as I haven't been to Uni. What is the personal statement for? Is it to send to Uni's? I would imagine it's statement about yourself to try and "sell" yourself to the Uni and make yoursef sound as good as you can or to go in your file but I'm not sure? x

Hello Frankie,
I commiserate with you on the personal statement front, it was the reason I didn't apply to university thru the UKAS system 10 years ago. I couldn't manage to write any good things about myself down on paper!!!!
As it was, I applied in person to a local university in the October after my results and was accepted that way (they pretty much take anyone by then) Anyway I'm not advocating that approach!!!! I much regret not applying thru UKAS and not going away to university. My uni friends (we're all still friends now) loved being away from home for the first time and loved the excitement of discovering a new city whereas it was all a bit boring for me, I'd already been to all the attractions, shops, pubs and nightclubs!!!
You're already doing really well to be thinking of it now and not putting it off. I don't remember what you were supposed to write but heres food for thought
Write a list of your good points (and forget any bad ones).
Ask your family/friends what your best qualities are as a person.
Write down the skills you've had to use to succeed in your AS level subjects or in any other school projects.
Write down what you envisage your future aspirations to be (if you know) and why you're choosing to study your particular subject
Write down the skills you've used in any part time jobs/work experience you've had
Write about any hobbies / past-times / interests you have and how they've helped you gain new skills.
I would also imagine that one of your teachers will be responsible for the applications process, try and see them early on before everyone else goes to them in a last minute panic. They should be able to go over a framework with you.
Good Luck

I've been through uni and am now doing a PhD. I remember the horrors of the UCAS form well and have also applied (successfully) for postgrad funding, which is pretty similar. If you feel like posting or private messaging a rough draft sometime I'd be happy to offer suggestions.
Alex
I remember having to try & write a personal statement, good luck with yours & your application.
You'll love university, which one are you applying to?

Hey Everbody,
Thank you all so much for replying. To answer all of the questions im looking at a list of 6 at the moment. These are - UEA (Norwich, not top choice at the mo), Nottingham, Kent/Canterbury, Warwick, York and Kings College (London). The last three are because a friend of mine is trying to encourage me to have a little more faith in myself, im not holding out much hope! (I think the words "underestimating yourself" and "not aware of your talent" were used as he tried to explain this too me!) Ideally i wanted to study english and history but in all honesty i think i may end up doing a degree in english. Im back at school on monday so one of the first things im going to do is try to find my admissions tutor and see if they have any advice or even a copy of the actual form.
So again, thank you to everyone, ill let you know as and when anything happens!
Frankie x
Well, you should apply realistically according to your predicted grades. It sounds like you're going to do pretty well, fingers crossed, so it's true you shouldn't sell yourself short. By the way, I'm originally from York (not living there right now) so if you have any questions about the place and perhaps about the uni - I didn't go there but have friends who did - you can always ask.
You definitely need to be looking at the form while you compose your personal statement because you need to get the length right - you only have so much space so you can't write too much, but at the same time you don't want it to be too short either.
