I had my fourth laser appointment today, and something isn't right. It hurt a lot, well, that's normal, but I thought it hurt more than the last three times. I had to spend an hour in the office after the treatment cooling my face.
On the way home it started burning really bad, not from heat (like it normally would) but a bad stinging pain. I called the doctor, they told me to cool it more and sent to the pharmacy for some skin cream.
Look at my face. I look like I've been tatooed. A lot of those squares you see are there b/c there is skin missing. That's why it stung so bad, the skin is scraped off. Does this mean I will have scars looking like this?
I don't know a lot about laser, but I do know you have to take steps to protect your skin at this point. Take several good pics of the damage. Keep your skinned cooled, use gentle cool cloths, whatever it takes.
Take an NSAID like advil or something now, for the pain, and it also might help with the inflammation.
Go to a dermatologist, and make sure you are given a good treatment that is antibiotic, and anti-inflammatory, and that is protective against future scarring. If you can't get in to the doc in a hurry, tell them exactly that this is on your face and you are concerned about scarring!
Good luck sweetie, you deserve nothing but excellent results from the laser. I'm excited for you.
(New baby is very cute! He's a year old now, isn't he?)

Hi Th,
it's ironic, isn't it, but the doctor who did the laser *is* a dermatologist. I have taken several pictures and emailed them to him. The thing is, it is 9pm over here, so any other action will have to wait till morning. I did take ibuprofen earlier today and will take another one before I go to bed.
(And yes, the baby is almost 13months now and just took his first few steps by himself today. -- Hey, I miss laughing at your posts. )
I know you are scared right now, but I wanted to let you know about a girl I went to school with. She went to check her radiater fluid after she got home and it exploded in her face, leaving her with severe burns. She had no eyelashes or eyebrows and some of the hair on her head had been burned off. They thought she would need to have plastic surgery. They gave her some sort of cream and within a few months, her skin was perfect. It was amazing. I just wanted to let you know that there are things that can be done to prevent permanent scarring. Good luck!

Looks to me like the dermatologist had the laser set too high. Keep your face cool, and use some Aloe Vera on it. That will cool the surface of the skin and help with the pain.
See the derm (or perhaps another doctor) right away. And make sure, if you have further treatments that they scale back the intensity.
I will go back to the doctor this morning. He actually reacted to my concerned emails by calling me from home at 8.30pm and said he'd like me to come in this morning, he would take care of it. I sure hope there won't be any permanent damage, I look awful. Here's a new picture.
Oh, and he did say he used a lower setting than last time, so I don't know why this happened...
::Hugs to you:: I really hope that things go well with the doctor hun, please keep us updated. I hope that laser works just as well as you hoped it would. I am sorry you are going through this right now...I feel terrible and I wish there was more I could do. ::Hugs::

Thanks for asking again, and sorry I wasn't able to answer right away, I've been away for a couple of days. I went back to the dermatologist Friday morning, and he prescribed two ointments. I've been slapping on the anti-inflammatory like mad, and my family tells me I look better. I am not so sure. A few of the scabs have come off, and while some had clear skin underneath, others had pink skin, which means it went deep and will look pink for a while. The dermatologist told me there'll be no scarring though, so fingers crossed.
Still, I am not sure if I want to continue the laser treatment. I'm scared this will happen again...
I am so sorry you had to experience this sweetheart. Thank you for keeping us updated. I am keeping my fingers crossed that everything will work out now and in the future....::Hugs::

I'm sorry. I doubt it will scar, but you may have marks for awhile. Does the doctor have any idea why this happened? If not, I don't think I'd keep going for treatments. Is it possible to switch lasers?

It's not really an option to switch doctors or lasers. I live in a rural area, and laser hair removal really isn't an everyday occurrence where I live. Not a lot of places do it, and few have a good reputation. The doctor thinks it might have been a skin reaction to the extreme stress I've been under the last few weeks, but he is not sure himself. Who's to say?
