Angry Oh no! Now MY hair is falling out!

I was diagnosed with PCOS about 8 years ago and never had hair loss. I started metformin about 5 years ago.

So this summer I decided to go on a lower-carb diet and take out all the bad carbs. I now eat pretty healthy! I don't each much sugar, bread, pasta, starchy foods, etc.

The metformin was making my blood sugar go too low, so I stopped it about five months ago. I've been feeling OK, but for the last month or so, my hair is falling out at an alarming rate! I've always had thick hair and I'd notice a hair or two fall out--perfectly normal--but now when I wash my hair in the shower the drain is FULL of hair, and it's falling out and covering my back and chest. It's on my clothes. It's scary.

I can tell my hair doesn't look the same and it feels quite thin.

I have a dr appt tomorrow. I'm going to ask about thyroid (though I've had it checked before), but has anyone else had this happen when they stopped metformin? I started back up for about the past week now. I hope it stops falling out soon. I'm beginning to panic!

My hair falls out no matter what. I have slowed it down by taking Phyto Hair Pills and Phyto Anti-aging Hair Mask. I must say that my hair is better now or else I believe that I'd be in wigs by now. I've been doing this for 6 months. The stuff is expensive, but my hair is worth it!

Jennier Anderson takes the pills.

Go to any store and get some BIOTIN NOW! 2 pills a day and get some prenatal vits too! Some sometimes stopping glucaphage can make your hair fall out. And if you look up "side effects of glucaphage" you will also find that hairloss is a side effect. Yes, get everything checked out. Also, spironalactone causes hair loss too. I used to have SOOOO much hair. Now you can see through the top down to my scalp. Also, go to your beautician. Nioxin #2 or #4. It removes DHT (a type of testosterone that causes male-pattern baldness) from your scalp and helps hair loss. Try not to use any heat on your hair.

I'm going through hair loss right now as well. Its repairing but its hard to go though this. Im there with you!!

Another shocker ... my hair does not look right unless it's blow-dried!

In the "selsun blue" thread a few pages back, they talk about a kind of zinc that helps grow hair over time. I don't wash my hair daily so who knows how long it will take for me. I found that zinc in the Avon dandruff shampoo, which is on sale right now for $1.99.

I stopped taking Met a few months ago, I was only on it for about a year just to see if it regulated my cycles...before Met I NEVER had problems with hair loss or bad skin or anything like that. Now I've stopped taking it and I feel like literally half my hair has fallin out at just a shocking rate...can't run my fingers through my hair without feeling it pulling out of my scalp. Just thought I'd add my experience, I wasn't able to find any info on Met (or stopping Met) causing hair loss in a person who previously never had it.

hi,
I have pcos too and i was diagnosed when i was 19. My hair was falling alot and it was coming off in chunks! Then someone told me to use castor oil on my scalp and it really worked! I noticed the difference in about a month or so. I used it about twice a week. Heres what i did:
Take 2 tablespoon of castor oil and mix it with 2 tablespoon of almond oil OR extravirgin olive oil. (either one, whatever you can find)
massage it on your roots and leave it for atleast 5-6 hours before you shampoo. I would leave it on overnight and shampoo my hair in the morning.
Take a good multivitamin supplement too.
hope this helps

The reason why you need to mix castor oil with another oil is because castor oil is very thick and you wont be able to apply it properly unless its diluted a bit. So find any other good oil. from my personal experience almond oil and olive are the best.
And remember to heat it for about 10 sec in microwave before you apply it because warm oil penetrates better into the roots since the pores are opened. But ofcourse make sure its not TOO hot or you might burn yourself!
Goodluck.
