Oh my goodness YES! Not only are you eating the wrong foods but you're eating too much! Remember that your pouch is still swollen from surgery and can't handle foods like that yet. I'm not sure about the dietary guidelines your surgeon has provided you but this is what my surgeon had me on and not once did I have any vomiting. The hamburger meat is just too much for your pouch to handle right now, same for the boiled egg (can you say dry?) & toast. It's too dry for your pouch right now and too dense. You should be on a soft protein/puree diet right now.

Week 1 - clear liquids
week 2 - soft moist proteins/puree's (scrambled egg, cottage cheese, low carb yogurt)
week 3 - add slightly more dense proteins like cheeses, fish, chicken (make sure it's MOIST!) in addition to foods from previous week
week 4 - add pork
week 5 - add beef
week 6 - add well cooked vegetables (like soft carrots, zucchini, mushrooms), avocado, stuff like that
week 8 - add low glycemic fruits (becareful about dumping).

Also in addition to those foods I was doing protein shakes, not protein bars due to the thickness of the bars as well as the sugar alcohol content (I dump off of sugar alcohols more quickly than I do regular sugar).

Lastly, how long are you taking to eat and how many oz are you eating. Right now you should be taking in about 2-3 tablespoons of food and taking 20 minutes to eat it. A good rule of thumb is 1oz per month until you reach your max of 4-6oz protein. I remember that I could eat 1oz at 1 month post op, 2oz (total food) at 2 months, 3oz at 3 months. I never had nausea or vomiting after eating.

I suggest giving your pouch a break...try going back to liquids for a day and then reintroduce solids. Start with a scrambled egg or cottage cheese. Measure out your foods, take your time & stop when you feel that sensation of being satisfied. Eat off of a teacup saucer...it helps with the mental aspect of seeing a full plate. Lastly make sure you chew until it's the consistancy of baby food before you swallow and make sure that you take 20 minutes to eat. If you have to step away from the food to make sure you do this then that's what you have to do. Remember you have to totally relearn how to eat.

Lastly I stress moist foods because dry foods will only swell up when it hits your pouch and can get stuck which results in a feeling like you have a rock in your stomach that can be painful as well as vomiting.

Give it a try and let me know how it goes....

I totally agree with Kristy. Way too much, WAY too fast! Get back to liquids and then progress slowly. I didn't have solids until 6 weeks out. Good luck!

I am going based off of this sheet the doct gave me. She put on there baratric soft diet and listed the foods, which everything I have ate is on the list. except i did try a few chips yesterday being the fourth of july and did ok with it with no problems.

Harvey, did you have lapband or RNy or ??? Those foods sound too advanced for any WLS. Even the lapbanders on our board are usually on full liquids for a while before they progress.

I did the RYN June 23 2009. I am going based off of my list that the doct gave me. I did full liquids for two days after surgery, and now im on soft foods. IF this isn't right what type of foods should I be eating? Like today I had some canned beats for lunch, and breakfast yogert with 1/4 cup of chili.

This is close to the way my post op progression went... Taken from http://www.pamf.org/wls/patients/diet.html#Stage 1

Week 1

The first stage of the gastric bypass diet, clear liquids (meaning beverages that you can almost see through), usually lasts for five to seven days after the operation.

The clear liquid diet starts with sips of water, and then allows foods like:
  • Sugar-free diluted juice
  • Diet gelatin
  • Bouillon or clear broth
  • Flat no fizz diet soda in small amounts (I DO NOT drink soda. Maybe a sip or some that has gone flat once a month or if I'm dumping and need some sugar to get me back up and there is nothing else around.)
You should drink approximately 2 ounces every 15 minutes or 8 ounces in an hour.

My first week consisted of broth, and sugar free popsicles mostly along with lots of water and propel, and of course sugar free jello.

Stage 2

Week 2

If no problems are experienced with clear liquids, the gastric bypass diet advances to semi-liquids which include high-protein liquids like Sugar-Free Carnation Instant Breakfast or another high protein, low sugar drink, as well as other thick liquids with a consistency similar to cream of wheat.

This stage of the diet lasts for one week. Most patients also begin taking a chewable multivitamin/mineral supplement, chewable calcium, and iron at this stage. Fluids continue to be consumed at the same rate as in stage 1. It is imperative that you stay hydrated and prevent loss of muscle mass.

On my 2nd week I did the SF carnation instant breakfast, no sugar or sugar free yogurt and SF puddings added to my food list.

Stage 3

Week 3 - 6

The physician will indicate when it is time to advance to smooth pureed foods. Some patients are able to start stage 3 after they have been out of the hospital for about two weeks. Others may need to wait longer. In this stage, you will progress from smooth pureed foods to soft, chunky foods over the course of three weeks.

The puree diet includes blenderized foods such as:
  • Cottage cheese
  • Casseroles
  • Lean meats like tuna fish, chicken or pork
  • Vegetables such as carrots or beets
Some patients find it more convenient to use strained baby foods. It is important to make sure that all foods are pureed or extremely soft and smooth in texture. You may progress to soft chopped or ground foods after approximately one to two weeks of smooth pureed foods. It is very important to chew all of your food well and eat slowly. Consume your high protein choices first. Continue to take a protein supplement between meals.

Regular Diet
After Six to Eight Weeks

The regular diet starts about six to eight weeks after gastric bypass surgery. You may continue to add new foods one at a time with the goal of achieving a well balanced diet of about 1,000 calories per day.

While this diet includes all six food groups, it is important to fill up with high-protein foods, such as lean protein, protein alternatives and dairy products, at every meal. Each meal or snack should be small with liquids consumed in between meals. Ask a dietitian for advice on planning an individualized regular diet pattern.

The diet TammyLynn provided is a good one to follow. Chips & baked potato should be no nos at this point. Your body can pull carbs from its fat cells. What you need to focus on is water & protein as there are 9 essential amino acids (what your body requires to function properly) that you must get from meats, your body can't make them.

I found the best low carb yogurt out there to be Dannon Lite & Fit Carb Control, it's a 4oz serving and has like 5-6g protein & 2-3g sugars...far less sugar than any other yogurt on the market.

Some good rules to learn are:

take small sips throughout the day - aim for 64-72oz a day
eat slow, approx 20 min per meal
chew well, at least 20-30 chews per bite
small bites, put fork down between bites
do not eat/drink at the same time - no drink for 60 min after eating

im ok... I just can't seem to slow down on the eating part. Every time I go to eat a meal I feel like it's a race and want to eat fast. I know im not supposed to but it's a habit and when I do that, I throw up the food. I am trying very hard not to do that cuz throwing up sucks . I am trying to get my fluids in, Im up to about 40 oz's a day now. As far as the protein, I tried the shakes there nasty, can't even bare a small sip of it. I tried the unflavored unjury also that's not the best. Any other suggestions would be great. I went to the doc and they said im doing ok with trying the foods because the list they gave me has baked potatoes on it but no skin. Soups, Chili, yogert, apple sauce, baby food, veggies (mushy), turkey, chicken, fish are also ok. I don't really have a pop problem other then I like caffeen so I have been drinking one unsweeten ice tea a day.

I do have one question, Is is it possible to get a leak after surgery like months down the road or it to break down from throwing up?

thanks

This early out it could be possible to injure your pouch from eating too much too fast. Remember that your incisions are still new & healing. You have GOT to SLOW down your eating. If it takes getting up and walking away between bites then do it.

As for protein shakes, many of them are not the tastiest. However, have you been to www.bariatriceating.com ? She has a protein shake sample pack that comes with lots of different flavors to try so that you're not stuck with a 2lb canister of one that's gross. Also, I believe that GNC will accept returns of protein that you don't like...but double check with them. Lastly have you tried Isopure? It's a clear liquid protein drink found at GNC. You can get a bottle that has like 40g in different flavors premixed. If you like a particular flavor they do sell the powder forms.

ok i will check out the website. I am trying to slow down on the eating thing. I just have this habit of eating fast to get the taste of it. I know that sounds stupid but it's the way I feel. I am trying not eat fast so i don't throw up any more. I threw up the turkey yesterday, and that was gross .
