Default Ok, I need the 411 on Metformin...

I'm new here and I'll be starting Metformin tomorrow (I got the pills today, but my stomach is already upset...I didn't want to push it by taking the met.) I have a severe phobia of and I need all the advice you ladies can give me on how to take my met. that way it won't upset my stomach. I'm only on 500mg. Should I be taking it with dinner? On a full stomach? With milk? What works for you? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give this newbie!

Hi Jacquelyne,

I just started taking my 500mg pill on Tuesday (diagnosed last week). That said, I am the champ of GI distress, so I was very worried to start my Metformin. I am happy to report that I have had no nausea or vomiting (and I upped my dose to include another 500mg pill this morning). My endocrinologist specifically said that if I eat carbs with my Met that I will be VERY sick. So, here's what I did:

started South Beach Diet Phase 1 (low-carbs)
take pill in the middle of meal
start meal with papaya enzyme tablet, ginger root capsule, and acidophilus capsule

I would avoid milk, as the first night I had celery with cream cheese (thought that was okay on SB Phase 1 -- oops), and that was the only time I had mild diarrhea.

Hope that helps!
Lori

Dose up slowly (with your Dr's approval) and take with food. Also, diet is HUGE. Eat to conrol your insulin and you can really cut down on side effects for yourself. My side effects disappeared the day I started using the IR diet.

Good luck!

Did you get Metformin XR? I've heard that it has far fewer side effects than the regular Metformin.

I take one tablet with breakfast, and one at bedtime. Never on an empty stomach.
