Default Ok now I'm beyond confused

My doctor called and I thought I'd be having a d&c scheduled this week. Then he tells me my hcg level is 42,000 and that it's right at where it should be and now he thinks maybe they just didn't "see" the baby. So now I have to go back and have another U/S?!? I mean it's human life so I'm not doing a d/c thing now until I get more than one opinion on that but has anyone heard of a mistaken blighted ovum??? This is one heck of a rollar coaster.

Yes, I have heard of misdiagnosed blighted ovums and m/c's. I dont remember the website exactly that gives stories of both but I'm sure another cyster can give it to you. And with us ladies with PCOS it is hard to know exactly when you ovulated or when exactly you should be measuring so it is very possible you were days or even weeks earlier than you thought and that's why they didnt see anything. I really hope you can get some answers and soon. ((HUGS))

It's possible!!! Sometimes depending on the shape of your uterus and/or the capabilities of the scanning equipment, it can be hard to see the fetal pole or the heart beat. When do you go back for another scan? It's entirely possible that in a week or 2 you will be able to see more.

I know how you feel. I'm in the middle of my own confusing diagnosis and still wondering what is real and what is not. I'm definitely not full of answers, but I do have a whole lot of empathy! Keep hanging in there!

I go back this Thursday but even if they don't see anything I'm going to ask them to wait a week or two because my hcg levels are at 42,000 at six weeks and he said that's excellent. So I refuse to have a d&c until I get another opinion (if needed) and I know for sure there's nothing there. I do have a tilted uterus so that might be the problem. Good lord- what a crazy experience.

I would DEFINATELY hold off on getting a D&C done hun...

Sometimes I regret having mine, deep down I think that I wasn't as far along as we all thought and I had a D&C to early!! Doctors CAN be wrong!!!

I hope everything goes great for you when you do your next u/s!

AlisonMK, thanks for posting that link. I have learned something new today.

I wonder why docs are in such a hurry to do a D&C when the Dx a blighted ovum?

When I had my m/c I started bleeding at 14.5 weeks, but the babies (twins) had died at 9 weeks, and the midwife still gave me the option to let the m/c happen naturally, or to have a D&C. There is a risk of DIC (dangerous clotting disorder) if a miscarriage doesn't happen within 6 weeks of embryonic death. I am not sure if there is this same risk with a blighted ovum too, but even at 6 weeks, the egg has only been implanted for 3 weeks. Surely they could wait at least until 8 weeks (5 weeks post implantantion) to do another U/S before doing the D&C, just to make sure there is no baby.
