I'm on the XR as well. Not only do I tolerate it well my RE says that it doesn't matter. In fact, he said he always uses the XR due to less side effects experienced by patients.

Hmmm...I've read many times that Met ER is better absorbed by the body than the reg Met. I've had little s/e with Met ER (nothing to complain about anyway).

I'm on the regular Met. No bad side effects to speak of yet, but I've just started back on it. I hope to see the good effects though.

i've had no s/e from met ER, but i just upped to 1000mg a few days ago. my dr said she put me on ER because of my ibs, and i haven't heard anything about it being less effective.

I haven't tried the extended release version, but in talking to my endo and others, there are some people who report that the weight loss effects of Met are better when not taking the extended release version. I'm happy on the regular version, so I'm not anxious to switch.
I don't agree with your endo. I started on regular Met and my endo switched me to Met XR and there's a huge difference. I have no stomach irritations and no hypoglycemia like I did with the regular Met. Plus, you don't have to worry as much about what time of day you take each dose if you forget one because it's absorbed slowly.

I've had great success with Met ER. I started out on the regular, but couldn't even tolerate 500mg much less my full dose of 1500mg. Too many side effects. Now on the ER I can take the full dose and I've lost 25 lbs in 6 months and I tolerate it well. Even if it's true that you absorb the regular better, it doesn't do you much good if you can't even take the full dose.

My Endo just recommened Glumetza. She said it's a much better drug than Met. She said Met is very hard on your system. Thought that was interesting.

Hey, Holland, Glumetza is brand name for metformin ER. They're the same thing except glumetza is the brand name and likely costs more money. Did she give any explanation as to why the name brand was better?

Hi everyone! I started off taking regular met and I now take XR. I definitely lost more weight on regular met but I feel SOOO much better on XR. I am gradually losing weight with XR but it's not happening as quickly. That's ok though b/c I really couldn't handle the side effects of regular met!
Thanks for the info. I have been on regular Met for nearly a year..and I never could get above the 500mg due to side effects. I have a doc appointment in two weeks and I"m going to ask to be switched to Met XR. so I can get the full dose I need.
