Default okay...define "hairy"

hi all,

this is my v. first post here... I am going to see a reproductive endocrinologist on thursday... and I've been readig up alot on the symptoms, and of course, the hairy thing popped up.

I've got way too many hairs on either side of my chin, course ones, but I wasn't sure if these patches counted or if the symptoms were like a full beard, or 'stache or something!

also, about 8 years ago, I went thru this big hairloss... a great deal of it fell out at te nape of my neck, and temples. It hasn't happened again... but could that have been part of this?

So, shall I point out these humiliating patches... or not say anything because they aren't really a proper symptom

thanks for your help,

You should always tell your doctor about any new or a change in symptoms. Just because you may not have as much hair growth as others(like me, for example, I have a lot of abnormal hair growth)doesn't mean that's not a symptom of PCOS. There is no set amount of growth to define "hairy," the amount can be different for every woman. Some only have blond hair here and there and others have lots of dark hair all over(that would be me again). I don't have hair loss to my knowledge, other than what is normal. But it never hurts just to mention something and see what the doc says. Good luck and welcome to SoulCysters.

Hello

Glad you found us.

I'd also say to tell your dr everything. However small it seems........

All the best for tomorrow, and please let us know how you get on.

I'm not noticeably hairy, but yeah, I have excess hair. I've just started noticing wispy sideburns where there weren't any before. Add that to the chin sprouts I have, and the happy trail, and yeah, I've got hirsutism.

When I went to see the specialist at the hospital he said to me he couldn't see any excess hair so where was it? Well, facially I have a darker and longer than average moustache area, which I shave - but that's manageable. And I have a patch about 2" x 1" of coarse black hair on one side under my chin. Now that's not normal! I don't care if it's a small area, it's big enough to give me serious self-esteem issues and wish someone would just pass me a scalpel so I can just cut that area away!

I also have hair under my belly button and my inner thighs are more hairy than they ought to be!

I have learned that alot of women have a worse problem than me but that doesn't mean I don't have a problem.

The hair you have is a very important symptom.

It's also not just how much hair you have, but the kind of hair you have. Most women have the very fine blond hairs on their body. . but women when PCOS tend to have hairs that are course and darker. Like the sideburns. . .I'm middle eastern so I'm a little hairier than most and have always have sideburns, but they have been very whispy. When my PCOS symptoms started setting in, the hair turned very course, dark and long. They almost matched the hair on my head but were definitely like hairs from a male beard. My stomach the same way; the hairs used to be really thin and light, now they are course like pubic hairs.

I would say if it`s not usual for you then it counts. I started out with a couple of pluckables under chin. Now I have 2 definate patches under chin, sideburns, long dark ones under tummy button, changing hairs everywhere else. I sware everytime I look they are chinging before my eyes.:o

Remember that not every cyster has the same symptoms or to the same degree. I would say that I think newbies these days (that`s me) would probably have a better chance at dealing with it, there is so much info out there now, that probably wasn`t years ago.

Good luck
