Okay So I Know I've Seen It Before But I Can't Remember
I AM WONDERING: DOES MET AFFECT ACNE? WELL I HAVE NEVER HAD PROBLEMS WITH ACNE EXCEPT WHEN I WAS A TEENAGER BUT I NOTICED THAT LATELY I HAVE SPONTANEOUS (SP SORRY) BREAK OUTS....I HAVE BEEN ON 1700MG FOR 5 MONTHS NOW AND I NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM BEFORE. I HAVEN'T CHANGED ANYTHING IN MY EATING HABITS, OR CLEANIN HABITS (AS FAR AS WASHING MY FACE AND ALL THAT) SO I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT COULD BE. THANKS
Liz,
This might be off-base, but the only reason that I can imagine metformin causing acne is that as we get our hormones closer to those of an average woman because met is fixing our problems, we start to see the symptoms of the hormones that an average woman experiences. Christyz, for example, started to experience some PMS. I congratulated her on becoming a normal woman! :p
I don't know if this is it, because in theory we are supposed to be reducing our skin problems. It's just a thought.
Best of luck,
Sheri

Sheri's right in that I now have PMS that includes a breakout before my period. But overall, I tend to have better skin overall since starting Met. The rest of the month my skin is clearer than it was when my PCOS was untreated. So it's kind of a trade off.... After years of not menstruating, I'll take it.
Is it possible that you are a week or so from getting your period and that's what causing the breakout? If so, pat yourself on the back, 'cuz Met's doing it's "thing'!
Good Luck!

One of the theorys on Acne is the presence of too many Androgens in the body.
Androgens are just the thing you are trying to combat with PCOS and taking the Metformin.
Metformin works by making the body cells more sensitive to insulin. If you are insulin resistent and not yet diabetic then your pancreas will probably be overproducing Insulin for the body and the over production of insulin stimulates those androgens to go crazy and makes the stress hormones(androgens) in the body a primary concern.
And as we all know, it's those ever anoying androgens that cause the estrogen to diminish and cause those cysts on those poly cystic ovaries to appear.
So the problem is thought to be the by product of too many androgens. That's what also gives some women the male pattern baldness thing going on.
In relation to metformin I would wonder if the met is doing it's job or maybe the plan for diet and exercise needs to be
re- considered to work better with the met.
Sometimes we are doing fine on the diet but if we don't do the exercise we are going to have big trouble too.
It's modality inclusive.
