Default Omega 3 fatty acids

Has anyone ever considered that a contributing factor to hair loss might be fatty acid deficiency? I was just reading in the book The Insulin-Resistance Diet and it said - "Some experts recommended using these oils as a daily supplement, especially if you are showing signs of fatty acid deficiency. This includes hair loss, dry hair, dry eyes, dry skin, constipation, and small bumps on the backs of the arms." I just read that and realized that I have all of those symptoms. I'm going to try adding a fish oil supplement and see what happens. Anyone tried this???

I just started the omega 3, fish oils on Monday. I also started other vitamins as well, but for the most part, I feel better. I'd be thrilled if this made my hair plump up!

What other vitamins did you start? I'm considering starting b-12 (since met messes with this vit somehow - it has to do with energy and mood I think), fish oil, Chromium, and a multi-vit.

I've started taking a prenatal vitamin, a B complex, AND 5000 mcg biotin. I also take sprio and I'm going to start taking my fish oil again.

OH my I have that book and apparently never paid attention to that. I have lots of that. Especially the bumps on the arms thing. dry skin, hair loss etc. My RE had me start taking fish oil when I first went to him. Saying it helped with cholesterol as well. I was having such bad s/e from the met I stopped taking it. I guess when the baby is born and it is safe for me to take I will start back.

Omega-3 fatty acids are really important for babies, too! DHA (one of the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids) is key in brain development.

When I started the Yaz, I started the Omega 3 Fish Oil 3pd @ 1000 mg; a women's daily vitamin; cinnamon capsules 2pd @ 500 mg each, b-12 1pd @ 100mcg, and folic acid 1pd @ 400mcg. If I'm for sure with PCOS, I'm not gonna screw around with this anymore.

I've only been taking it for a few days, but I have had that problem once. But then I didn't drink a whole glass of water with my pill and I think that was the problem. I've learned that is really important. When I got to the store I actually ended up getting an Omega Complex which had 3, 6, & 9 in it. It has fish, flaxseed, borage, and safflower oils in it. My God it's a horse pill!!!! lol Lots of water is definately a must!!!

My fish pills are vanilla flavor coated. There's also some at GNC I just saw yesterday that are lemon flavored.

I get enteric coated capsules at Sam's Club. It takes care of the fishy burbs.

April - that may be true and fish oils , omega 3 and 6's are good but if you are on this site and you have PCOS, chances are the higher and slightly higher free testosterone levels are causing your hairloss (you were genetically prone anyway).. you might find some of the males in your family have thinning hair in 20's , 30;s and 40's. (might not be all but some).

Don't worry when I first had my hair loss - I So wanted it to be temporary or something I could fix. Something I wasn't eating or something I wasn't getting enough of.

Iron, Vit B, Zinc, biotin = but realistically these have to be really low to cause hairloss and even that is likelyl to be slight.

I've finally accepted its my higher free testosterone caused by PCOS and insulin resistance and my recent weight gain and the BEST thing I can do for myself now is eat LOW GI diet, keeping taking the metformin....

hmmmm I'd love it to be lack of Omega fish oil - no such luck, I eat lots of tuna and have salmon oil tablets too.
Vita B, yes , Iron yes,, calcium maganesium, zinc Yep take em all.

Sarrah,
I have no doubt that the free testosterone is the major reason for my hair loss. Just think that maybe I am also defiecient in Omega 3 because I have all of the other symptoms too. Dry hair, Dry eyes (I have to carry around eye drops), extreemely dry skin (everywhere but my face ), constipation and especially the bumps on the backs of my arms. No one has ever been able to explain that one to me until I read that in the IR diet book. I'm treating the IR with met and the IR diet. I've also started taking B12 and a multivit. Just trying to get healthy.
