Default Once Hypothyriod.. but not any more?!

My DR diagnosed me with Hypothyroid about two years ago.. I went on synthroid for about a year, then I lost my insurance coverage so stopped taking it.

In November, I got insurance again, and had my thyroid retested.. I wasn't taking any synthroid for many months, but my thyroid levels came back completely normal.

Has that happened to anyone else? After my Dr did the thyroid tests, she did other tests that lead her to diagnose me with PCOS. This lead me to believe the hypothyroid I had was related also to the PCOS.

Any input would be great! Thanks!

what were your thyroid levels when you were first Diganosed? What are your levels now? did you have any symptoms of having Hypothyroidism when you went to the dr or were you just going in for a check up, I mean did you specifically go to have your thyroid checked? I don't know about one time being hypo then going normal, I am hypothryoid I was dx in 1999 but believe I had it since 1988, and I feel like crud when I am off my meds, or my med levels are off. Do you have any symptoms like being tired, cold, mood swings? My 3 yr old dd is also hypo just recently dx and her thyroid dr said your TSH rises to compensate for the T3 and T4 and Tfrees but that her thyroid is dying, the meds will compensate for the dying thyroid but she will have to be like me on meds for the rest of her life. ShenaCat on here knows quite a bit about thyroid, you could try PMing her, also I go to http://thyroid.about.com/od/hypothyr...index.htm?nl=1 this site is GREAT when it comes to info about your thyroid, I'm sorry I don't know more. But I too believe that I got the hypothyroidism due to having PCOS. I wish you much luck in your journey!

Mouse: I was DX with hypothyroidism in 97. My meds ended up being high dose Synthroid. I dont remember the dosage. I too, lost my insurance and went off the meds, I didnt feel bad by not taking them, I felt fine.. A year later I went to the dr and told him of the previous diagnosis and he ran a test and said my thyroid was normal. This went on till 02 when i started feeling crapy. I had moved and went to another dr and just simply told my dr I had been taking synthroid but couldnt remember the dose.. He just gave me a script and never checked my thyroid. I felt better. He since left the practice and I felt my synthroid needed upped, so i told my new dr a different amt that I was taking and he too gave me a scrip no questions asked. A couple of months later, he did my thyroid function test and it came up normal and he said that my meds were "right on target".. (I have since told him of my self diagnosing and how I apparently didnt need meds several years ago.. he had no answer on why, but happy that I told him and happy that my meds are ok and on track)

Who knows what has gone on and why i went from needing meds to not needing meds to needing them again. I am so much more in tune w/ my body now that I felt comfortable with self diagnosing my increase in thyroid. NOT A Safe recommendation but thankfully I have a understanding dr.

Hope you get the answers you need!

Dear Paula,

Thanks! You actually give me some hope that maybe my recent test was just a fluke thing. Still seems crazy though, don't you think? lol
