Question Once there was a lucious head of hair....

Hello, My name is Kerry and I have been recently diagnosed with PCOS. For about 7 years prior to my diagnosis, my mom has been telling me that my hair is thinning. It was only until about a year ago that I really noticed it (since I don't have eyes that can see the top of my head). Every time I brush my hair, I have to clean my brush and whenever I have a shower, I end up losing enough hair to make a golf-ball sized hair ball. ICK!

I have not been on any medications for the hair loss or on birth control or anything. My first blood tests showed that my hormonal levels were normal (that was five months ago). I am awaiting my final doctor appointment for my official diagnosis (the gyno is awaiting the second round of blood test results).

My question to all you awesome ppl is: What the heck?! why am I losing my hair and is there anything out there that will not damage my existing hair yet help with this??

Thanks a billion!

(ps, this site is awesome! I was looking for a good support group where I can get REAL answers - thx again!!)

The hair loss is very difficult to deal with. Mine has been thinning consistently for years, and it makes me sad everyday.

With PCOS, usually the hair loss is because of elevated levels of androgens. Many times docs will prescribe Spironolactone for this.

Personally, I make sure to use Nioxin shampoo, take Biotin, and prenatal vitamins. These seem to help me a little. Some people do well with Rogaine. But, everyone is different. It would be best to talk to a doctor.

Hi. I know how you feel. What other symptoms are you having other than the hair loss?

Symptoms, eh... hmm...
~acne, blackheads, and pimples - occurs spontaneously and b/c i pluck the hair on my chin.
~dark hair under on my chin and neck.
~some dark hair on my shoulders (i cant wear some shirts because of this).
~a lot of extra fat on my stomach (i call them the bread rolls).
~very irregular periods, but over the past 9 months it has been every 3 months.
~I get headaches when I dont eat enough.
~Back pain - associated with the stomach weight.
~Itchy scalp sometimes - once or twice every other day.
~Fast rate of hair growth on my legs - cant go 3 days without shaving
.... I think that pretty much covers it.
