Default Only 28 but very curious about this: menopause

Do women with PCOS experience menopause earlier?
And how do you know you are in menopause or perimenopause when you dont have periods as it is.
Also does PCOS make menopause any different as compared tot eh typical population?

I dont think I am in this or anything... I was just thinking about it.

I will tell u my hormones were so off from PCOS besides no pds for over 1 yr & all other symptoms, I was having serious HOT FLASHES!!! I won't bother to try 2 find a research article to back this up & some might deny it, but at 22 I believe my body was going thru menopause & just starting to shut down. I THINK...that if ur closer to menopause age & already not ovulating, it would probly start earlier. Lupron injections is a "medical Menopause" I've had that too...

I think dr's attribute an early menopause to Premature ovarian failure...1 just sd sumthn similar to me...but my FSH or TSH levels were normal so he could or would not explain my serious hot flashes when my ovaries stop ovulation on their own for long pds of time due to PCOS.

Well I was being treated for YEARS as PCOS which I still believe I have - have a majority of the symptoms - but I was also diagnosed with Premature Ovarian Failure in the last 2 years which was a shock to say the least. I am trying to find info on how POF affects PCOS but it doesn't seem there is a lot on the subject. From what I have found the symptoms of PCOS remain after POF and may even worsen. This stuff is so hard to get diagnosed and many doctors don't want to take the time and I'm sure many insurances don't want to spend the money. Premature Ovarian Failure only affects 1% of the population supposedly so lucky me.

I don't believe that PCOS causes menopause to occur earlier but again - from what I HAVE found on PCOS after POF (which in effect IS menopause) the symptoms stay the same or worsen.

I have requested the mods several times to make a special population thread for PCOS and menopause, but to no avail. Not much is really known about that subject.

I am 48 and completely menopausal. In fact I had a uterine biopsy recently and my endometrial cells were found to be nonfunctioning. My last period was Oct. 2007. Forty-eight is considered to be very early menopause.

I think a doctor would need FSH, LH, and estradiol tested several times to make that kind of diagnosis.

Anyone can start a thread. If there isn't one, it's because you haven't started one.

BTW, you might want to make a point to check out the Research Articles forum to stay abreast of the rearch on PCOS and Menopause. That way you can refer newies to the links, when questions come up.

My understanding is that PCOS gets a lot harder to diagnosis as you approach menopause - I think that the hormonal changes associated with menopause would make diagnoisis harder also maybe PCOS is still thought of too much as a purley "reproductive problem" and doctors don't take sufficient interest in diagnosing PCOS in women after a certain age. To me that just seems like wrong thinking because I think around and after the age age of menopause is when some of the scary risk factor that are associated with PCOS are even more likely to occur. This is something that concerns me for my mother.

witchgrl - if you have concerns related to POF - you might want to make sure that you don't have any bone loss.

If you are having symptoms possibly related to insufficient female hormones or menopausal-like symptoms such as hot flashes - at any age - you might want to consider reading one or more of the books by Dr Vliet - she is a very good source of information both for PCOS and for the hormonal problems related to menopausal symptoms.
