I saw my endo today. She no longer thinks I really fit the PCOS diagnosis - at least not the typical one. I never really did. I'm thin and my blood tests come back normal. The only symptoms I exhibit are a LH:FSH ratio that is off and acne/hirsuteness.
But I still have the acne and excess hair so something needs to be done. I took Spiro a while ago and it made me sick.
I was trying to ask for flutamide today while in her office but for some reason ended up asking for finasteride. So I left with a prescription for finasteride. Whoops.
My questions is do I fill it and take it or call her back for a script for flutamide? I want my acne cleared and I want some help with the hair. I'm sick of feeling like a gorilla and shaving my face every morning.
Which drug works better? Any experiences? I've gone through the archives and it seems experiences differ and there isn't a lot of experience with finasteride (Proscar). Since my main concern is the acne it seems like flutamide is the way to go. Opinions?
I'd really like to see some improvement in the acne by Christmas. I know that's pretty much a dream but...oh well.
Btw, I'm not trying to get pregnant and I never will try to get pregnant. Yes, my liver is being tested.
Have you tried a BCP like Yaz or Estrostep FE? I used to take Estrostep and it helped with hair and acne. I don't remeber how long it took to make a difference, but once it kicked in, I felt and looked great. Remember, regarless of what medication yeou take for hair and acne, they come back when you go off if you don't treat the undelying problem. I use Proactive and my skin is very clear. I know it doesn't work for everyone though.
No, no birth control has been suggested. I don't need it and the one time I did take it I was a mess.
And the issue is I don't seem to have an underlying issue to treat. Blood tests are all normal. I just seem to have a hypersensitivity to testosterone.
Or am I missing something?
She doesn't even think I have PCOS. My periods are regular, my weight is normal, my blood pressure, etc is all fine. The only thing I have is a slightly off LH:FSH ratio and acne/hair. You have to meet three criteria for a diagnosis. I don't meet three criteria.
She probably would put me on Metformin if I asked but is it really necessary?
Met will only help if you are IR. It helps to sensitize your body to Insulin, so I don't think that is going to help witht the hair/acne problem. Even though you don't NEED BCP, you can still take them. The ones for hair/acne might work better than the one you took in the past. There are other conditions that cause raised testosterone, such as a pituitary tumor. You might ask your doctor about checking you for that.
If your doctor sayd its not PCOS, then ask what else it can be. Your testosterone has to be high for a reason. If she can't help you, ask for a referral to someone else. BTW, what kind of doctor are you seeing?
