Default Oral Thrush

Hi ladies

I am very scared. A couple weeks ago, I went to the doctor due to a sore throat, as I thought I had strep, but it was negative. Then a few days later, I went to the doctor because I noticed some white patches on my mouth that looked like thrush. She said it probably was thrush and gave me Mycelex lozenges, and the infection cleared up. I also had her test me for HIV, and the test was negative. Thank the LORD!

To keep the infection at bay, I have been taking garlic oil supplements along with eating probiotic yogurts. Well, now it looks like some white coating is returning, only on the back of my tongue right now, but I am so afraid the infection is coming back, and I am so scared that something is wrong with me/my immune system because this issue is so rare in otherwise healthy people. I was on a course of antibiotics after wisdom teeth removal, but that was over a month ago. I am not so much worried about the infection itself, because my doctor can just give me more medicine and I am HIV negative, but I am so worried that there is something seriously wrong with me.

I just don't know how common oral thrush is with people who have PCOS? Is it common? I am taking Yaz to regulate my hormones. I can't stop crying over this. I try to brush my tongue, but it keep coming back. If you guys do deal with mild cases or oral thrush, how do you treat it?

Thanks for hearing me out

I would go back to the doctor and see what they have to say. They might not have given you a strong enough dose of the medicine. Thrush is essentially a yeast infection of the mouth and throat. It can cause everything to be raw. I know this because the lady I work with had it 2 weeks ago. She couldn't eat anything salty or crunchy for a week. At one point her mouth and tongue were swelled up so bad that her tongue was hanging out of her mouth! Definitely have it looked at, but I don't think it has anything to do with your immune system.

I never went to a doctor for it (Baaaaad nurse!), but started eating yogurt and larges doses of vitamin C daily for a while and it went away. My mouth never got raw or anything painful, just white furry tongue with bad breath with a weird sensation swallowing. It was like that for about 3 weeks I would say, and eventually went away. I've never had a vaginal yeast infection, FYI. It has not returned. I assume it was thrush for lack of any other ideas. But, I too have no predisposing medical conditions. No diabetes/high blood sugar, no HIV, no recent infections or antibiotics... Since you were already on meds for it and it didn't erradicate it I would definitely return to the doc or at least call for an Rx renewal, because infections can get resistent to medications if not cured the first round of meds, or perhaps it wasn't the right medication anyway. Hope you feel better soon. Sorry to say I don't know why we would be more prone to get thrush.

I had this after a high dose of anti-biotics for bronchitis several years ago. My doc prescribed something for it, but I had to go to a compound pharmacy to get it. Since it was a Friday afternoon, I ended up not getting the prescription. I ate lots of yogurt and popcicles (my mouth felt hot). It went away after not too long and didn't return. Good luck - I remember it was miserable.

I agree.
I've had problems with vaginal thrush (seems to be caused by Dianette) and one pessary never works for me - I'm usually prescribed 3 (to use 3 consecutive nights), due to the severity of the thrush.
You probably just need a stronger dose to knock it out completely.

I have given up trying to treat mine. I get the mouthwash, it clears up & it returns.
I have tried diet changes and still end up with white painful patches in my mouth.
Mine originally started as an early teen after a long treatment of of tetracycline and I just wish it would go away indefinately.

I had it once after a round of antibiotics. I had to swish Milk of Magnesia in my mouth. I don't remember how many times a day, it was sooooo long ago. My mom (who is diabetic) gets them everytime she is on an antibiotic. She gets some type of lozenge from the Dr. to take care of it.

Good luck.

Beetlegirl, I am sorry to hear that. Has your doctor tested you for any underlying conditions that could be causing it? Perhaps you just need stronger meds, or it may be a medication (I heard asthma meds can cause it). The lozenges worked well to clear it out of my mouth, and they don't taste that bad.

Eating plain yogurt and limiting sugar intake helps too, and I read somewhere that garlic can help kill it off.

There's definitely no way I can give up sugar!

I have heard that about Garlic(even knew a girl who used it for vaginal infections by wrapping Garlic in Cheese cloth and inserting it in to her vagina) but I have never tried it.
Since it seems as though I am always at the doctor for one or another, I have just stopped complaining and so my doctor has not followed up to the why.
I am very infection prone. Any infection I can develop, I do, and badly. A past doctor said it was because I had a weak immune system. I have never looked into this either, but it maybe time to start.
