hi i just wanted to hear other cysters views on organ donation. Im all for it and have applied for a donor card and currently my nhs number is being matched to the donor list. the only thing i dont want donated is my eyes i couldnt bare for my family and friends to see my eyes in another persons face.my cousin is blind and i know he would be really overwhelmed to see but i dont no i just couldnt face , i know it sounds unfair especially cos ill be dead and not needing them but i dont know ...what is your opinion on organ donation?? you never know they might have ovarys being able to be transplanted...lol.

I carry an organ donor card and am registered on the list and have been since I can remember. I give blood too (although not at the minute as I cant as I have had a baby within a year).
I dont understand why people wont donate their organs to be honest. My dp says he dosnt want his donated and he wont give blood either, and it is one of my biggest irks with him. Of course, if the worst were to happen, I wouldn't donate his organs because it would be against his wishes, but I wish he would change his mind on the issue.... but so far he remains pretty stubborn about it. He says he dosn't even want mine to be donated if I were to die... but I hope for everybody's sake that they get donated.

I think it would be the biggest comfort and offer a small piece of hope in a time of such sadness. Even if something were to happen to my daughter I would want her organs donated.

I dont understand why the UK dosnt have an "opt out" system instead of an "opt in" system.

When I go, they can have anything they want. I feel a bit guilty at the minute because I can't give blood for the next year (had semi permanent make up done, so is like a tattoo)

My husband feels a bit left out when i do give blood because he can't give as he's on medication for epilepsy.

My cousin died in a car accident when he was 17 and his parents found it a comfort to know that his organs helped 3 people live

I won't need anything - they can take the lot for all I care!!!!

My hubby is a bit funny about it though, although he does carry a donor card.

Thumbs up My Views On Organ Donation!

Good topic!

I am all for Organ Donation!

My mother has “Renal Failure” her own kidneys do not function at all and have not done for the past 12 years now. Renal Failure runs in the family, her own mother died of it when she was 72, her Uncle died of it and her Grandma!

She’s spent time on Dialysis and has undergone two Kidney transplants. The first one which developed a blood clot and had to removed after five days. Her second Kidney transplant was in 1999 and she has had this now for five years but for the past 18 months we are aware that this is not functioning as well as it should be and she is currently preparing for tests to see if she can go back onto the Transplant list for a 3rd. Her consultant would like her to as despite her age (59) she’s fit and healthy, not overweight and does not drink. We are hoping that there might be a chance she will bypass dialysis and just receive a 3rd transplant but as time progresses there is more chance she will go onto Dialysis in the mean time.

I think a lot of people think Dialysis is just being attached to a machine a few times a week, but there are so many different kinds of it. My mother did CAPD “Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis” which was done at home 4 times a day each session lasting around 30 minutes. It’s very restricting but people learn to adapt and we where often seen on day trips to Blackpool with hot water bottles and coat hangers to squeeze in a Dialysis session! I know my mum would never like to go on machine Dialysis at hospital because she says she would find it boring to have to sit there for hours on end. Personally from my point of view and if I ever needed Dialysis I would choose hospital Dialysis as I would find CAPD too restricting.

(Okay so that’s the run down on living with someone who needs / has a transplant)

Last year I started to promote Organ Donation for the UK by obtaining lots of promo items and distributing them out. I gave them out mainly at work and I was rather surprised how many people said there would be no chance they would donate there organs. I accept people have there own opinions but often I wish these people would put themselves in the shoes of others and ask themselves would they say that if there own family where waiting for a Transplant?

I’ve carried a donor card for a long as I can remember, a lot longer than before my mum ever told me about her condition, I once spotted one in my Dad’s wallet and he explained what it was to me and since then I had my own. I think I was about 9 years old.

I always thought I would never donate my Corneas (eyes) but then I watched a TV programme on it a couple of years ago and it was from then I decided I would offer to donate my Corneas, after all it’s not your eye that is being transplanted so no one is going to be walking around with your eyeballs!

I use to be a Blood Donor as soon as I hit 18 because of the amount of blood I’ve seen my mum have it seemed natural to offer something back. However when I became diabetic and medicated I could no longer donate blood which is sad but a fact of life…

I had a dear friend called Zoe who died of a brain tumour in 2002, I grew up with Zoe from Primary School age and although she was dying she did her best to get the people in this town to consider Organ Donation.

There are a few articles below what appeared in our local paper.

Tragic Zoe's gift of hope
21st August 2004

That Was The Week That Was
28th August 2004

http://archive.theboltonnews.co.uk/2...28/471478.html

Her face became posters for Organ Donation throughout the UK (you know the big billboard ones) and she donated her body tissue for medical research. She was incredibly brave to do all this when she knew she was dying. Anyone who knew Zoe well where very proud of what she did and how she handled being ill, she knew she was dying yet she remained positive to the end. I shall always remember her well, especially as she use to pick on me for having curly hair and she was the first person to explain what a bidet was to me on our school trip to France! Lol

So, yes as you can see I am all for Organ Donation and agree it should be an “Opt Out” system not an “Opt In” one.

Many years ago my Dad was tested to see if he was a match to donate a Kidney to my mum but he was not, I also wanted to be tested but to this day my mum will not let me be a live donor for her… I think she worries about the fact Renal Failure runs in the family and that I myself one day my succumb to this disease.

The UK has its own website about Organ Donation! Check it out for more information!

Organ donation is definitely an important thing to do! I would allow any part of me to be donated if it would help someone else.

I'm also on the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Register. Bone marrow is something else you can donate while still living, usually for people with leukaemia. It's a fairly minor operation for the donor (obviously I haven't been called up, and maybe I never will be a match, but you never know). Healthy people might consider joining up, and encouraging male partners/relatives as friends... they particularly need males because women can't donate while pregnant or for some time after, and I think men can donate larger amounts of marrow too.

Mazarin, your friend sounded like a wonderful person.
