Insulin resistance and the metabolic syndrome are key features of the polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which have inspired the therapeutic use of metformin. They may also point to a role for anti-obesity drugs, point out UK researchers.
To investigate, the team compared the effects of orlistat with those of metformin in a 3-month randomized trial involving 21 PCOS patients. They found that both treatments induced significant reductions in weight and total testosterone concentration.
"The reduction in total testosterone was similar to that seen after treatment with metformin. Therefore, orlistat may prove to be a useful adjunct in the treatment of PCOS," V. Jayagopal (University of Hull, UK) and co-workers conclude
