I am living in Ottawa. I actually just recently saw an endocrinologist. He was very good - Dr.Silverman. He knew what he was talking about, very educated on PCOS, and allowed me to decide what I wanted and what my goals were for treatment. I am now on Metformin 500 mg for 2 weeks, then up to 1000 mg.
Hope you're all having a great Thursday.
I am also in ottawa, seeing Dr. Hierlihy. I've been seeing her for about 2 years now and I am still unsure about her ways. Is Dr. Silverman taking new patients?

I'm totally not happy with my endo... and that's putting it lightly.
though I can't even find a GP, so getting a referral would be tough.
anyways Kindell, welcome to SC too!

Kindell,
Welcome to SC!
I'm also in Ottawa and seeing a Naturopath. I haven't tried an Endo or RE yet. I'm hoping that the Naturopath will work for me, but if not I will go back to Western medicine.
Glad you found a good dr.

Hi,
Yeah I believe he is accepting new patients but you would need a referral. He was very good - his initial assessment was quite quick and not necessarily very thorough but my family doctor always does a good health assess. so that didn't concern me. I liked him because he really understands the vicious cycle with PCOS and talked it out with me and allowed me to make decisions in regards to my treatment goals and what I wanted. I have a follow up appt with him in 2 months in regards to the metformin and then I expect he will prescribe me Diane 35... If you're not getting what you want from the doctor you currently have, Dr.Silverman may be worth a shot! I guess it entirely depends on your goals... symptom management vs. fertility ? I'd say he's great in regards to symptom management! All the best to you,
Kindell
I just moved to Ottawa in the past few months so I don't have a GP here but you know what I did, I went to a walk in clinic that was accepting new patients. I went to Southbank Medical Centre... at 2430 Bank St. (corner of Bank and Hunt Club). They are accepting new patients - it's a walk-in clinic and then by appt. when you have a doctor there. So I now have a doctor there, but if I use the walk-in services it's whoever is working... Anyway. That was where I went for my referral. The Dr. had me fax all my lab/test results to her so she could make an appt. for a referral with an Endo for me and that is how I got my appt. with Dr.Silverman. Just an idea for you, since you don't have a GP. The clinic # is736 6946. Good luck!
Kindell
I'm definitely more about the symptom management than fertility right now.
as for the tip re: walk in clinic, that's awesome. I'm currently on a waiting list for a GP who has a focus on gyn stuff...so hoping that'll come through.
where did you move from? I've been in Ottawa for about five years now, though just moved out of city limits about 20 minutes away.

Sure no problem!
I just moved here from Thunder Bay. There was not enough job prospects from my hometown as there is here in Ottawa. My fiancee and I actually both found jobs here before we even found an apartment - it was great!
How did you get on a waiting list for a GP? I'm due for my annual pelvic exam (eek) but I am unclear where I should go for one... Is there a reputable sexual health clinic in Ottawa that you are aware of?
Are you taking metformin? If so, did you suffer from any abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, etc. and how long after starting it did you notice the side effects? I just started it 4 days ago... I think i'm going to give myself diarrhea i'm so nervous about the side effects! hehe...
Have a great day!
as for getting on a waiting list, I just called the office and asked if they had one and if so, could they add me to it. The receptionist said the list was quite long, but since I have an 'ongoing medical issue,' I might get in sooner. (this was only about 10 days ago...)
you should check out this link for a doctor's search in ottawa. set the search to 'accepting new patients' and hopefully someone will pop up.
and yeah, there is a sex clinic in town on Clarence Street around the market. 179 Clarence. Phone number is 234-4641. I've only ever been there for testing, but I'm sure they do paps and all that fun stuff.
I'm not on Met. I wanted to try it as I am IR, but my endo wouldn't give it to me. grr. there's a met forum here, so I'm sure there are tons of ladies who can help you with that!

I'm from Ottawa too... well actually, near Ottawa. I just got diagnosed yesterday with PCOS and my family doctor is refering me to Dr Flemming. She's a gyn. As anyone heard of her? I still don't have an appt with her, I'm waiting to get one.

Sorry I haven't heard of Dr.Fleming. Good luck with your upcoming appointment. I am on day 10 of taking Metformin - so far so good - I've had no abdominal pain, and only one bout of diarrhea!
i think that Carleton place isn't too far from me. I live right by the Experimental Farm, is that close to you Julie?
Have a great weekend all!
