I recently had a Dr. tell me that most of what I was experiencing was tottally normal for a woman in her 30's. I think it is crap. I have not been "officially" diagnosed with PCOS, but I am pretty darn positive that is what is going on with me. So positive in fact that is why I found this site. Anyhow, I have terrible abdominal pain, and my Gastrointerologist (different Dr. than the one who said all the stupid comments to me) sent me for US. They discovered that my left ovary was twice the normal size and had multiple pearl string cysts. I have had the worst possible PMS that lasts for up to two weeks before I have my occasional day of spotting every couple of months. The Dr. said that everyone in their 30's is irregular and that I should just expect it. He also said that I might be suffering from a "mild case of hypochondria" as he put it. I wanted to deck him in the mouth, but of course refrained. I sought out another Dr., this time and OB/Gyn and had horrible luck. She was tottally obnoxious and said that I needed to just take progesterone and I would be fine. I have been on the Progesterone since the end of October and still am not regular and am sure I have new cysts. I am so frustrated. Have any of you had Dr.'s say that it just happens to women in their 30's and it is to be expected? I am dumbfounded and I can't afford a million co-pays. I am just bummed that I can't fix all this mess.

Wow! Unbelievable! Why have I been going through this since puberty then? I've only been in my 30's for 5 years..... wow!
Just when you think you've heard them all.......
Please, I know it is difficult, but please find a new doctor.... neither of these doctors seem to be understanding of what we go through.
Yikes!

I just wanted to say....like everyone else...get another doc. I had a real bad experience when I went to my Primary Care doc. Basically, she told me "to excercise" Not a newsflash. And they proceeded to ask me what I wanted her to do for me...ummmm, run some blood tests. She insisted that there was no such thing as "insulin resistence" and then said "what? Do you think you have PCOS or something....that is impossible, you have children"
Well....from being well read, I knew there was such a thing as insulin resistence....and I took my health in my own hands...and sought out another doctor who came highly recommended to me. He is a infertility endocrinologist. He agreed that I may have this syndrome...and we are currently in the process of testing. Basically.....please do some more research of doctors in your area...and be vigilant!!!! Good Luck!
I'm with everybody else; I think it would be best to find a new doctor. I know how much of a pain it is but it is totally worth it.
I was dx with pcos from my PCP (she's fabulous). Since she is part of a large clinic, she followed their protocol and sent me to their "infertility specialist". Well the "infertility specialist" is not a dr; she's a nurse practitioner (sp?) that has taken classes in IF. The entire time she was treating me, I knew she was in over her head but letting her ego get in the way. She told me things like "I treat all my patients that way" when I questioned anything she did and "It's not my job to get you healthy, only to get you pg" when I wanted to up my met dosage (since my insulin level had gone UP and not down) before moving to clomid. After a year of this woman's crap, I finally went back to my PCP and she couldn't believe I stayed with the "infertility specialist" for so long. My PCP said she would give me a referral to whichever dr I wanted to go to whether or not they were affiliated with the clinic or not so I'm now on a quest to find the right one. It's such a pain in the butt!! I've already been to one RE and he just wasn't the right one for me so I'm seeing a new IF Dr in Feb. I keep telling myself that I'm worth it - I deserve the best care I can find and so do you. Good luck!!

Maybe the "Find a Doctor" links can help you find a PCOS friendly doctor in your area.
These are service providers and we should get the best possible service. We wouldn't take this from a mechanic would we? So why take it from a dr.?
Personally I love my ob/gyn, who diagnosed me. But, I don't like his attitude towards holistic medicine, which is the path that I have chosen, so he will have to go...
Good luck on your quest,
Oshrat

Got symptoms under control with no meds.
You just have to get to a new doctor. Try to get to an endocrinologist ASAP!!
I almost gave up this year, and JUST found a suitable doc..and he was the first endo I have seen. I JUST was diagnosed!!!! After a lifetime of symptoms and problems.
I went through more doctors than I could even begin to count, some general internal docs, and many gyn's. I am pretty bitter over the treatment. I had most of them tell me I should go on antidepressants because it was all in my head, and argued with me when I insisted this was not a psychological condition!
I even had a doc tell me there was no way to test hormones though bloodwork, can you believe that? This sums up my experiences with doctors at the University of Michigan, University of Washington, many Seattle doctors, and 2 GYNS in Los Angeles.
I almost gave up..my medical debt is staggering..but I decided to try one more doc..an endo. He knew what was wrong by just listening to what I had to say. He knew before I even showed him the labs I already had done. Doctors should have caught my problems over a decade ago!
Well, I have been talking to most every woman I meet trying to get referralls to a good Dr. They are all pointing me in one direction. Dr. Shoeden. So, I will try her and see how it goes. I am thinking an Endo Dr. though too. I woke up this morning with the worst cramps in the world and no Aunt Flo in sight. I can feel new cysts on my right side and I am uncomfortable to say the least. I had a Dr. tell me that they can't tell anything from hormone tests anyhow and even refused to do them on my. All I could get her to do was my TSH level. Supposedly I was in a perfectly normal range, but I am thinking that maybe my normal isn't everyone else's normal. How do they get these "ranges" anyhow?

I live in Albuquerque and my doctor is wonderful, if you need someone to see. He is an OB/GYN but diagnosed me in the first 5 min and I was only there for an annual checkup! He's got me on met, ran all sorts of blood tests, and is very sympathetic.
Just let me know if you want to know his name.
