Unhappy Ovarian Cancer?

Hi, everyone

I've been around on and off for a year or so, but rarely do I post. I thought now would be a good time, and I was wondering if anyone else is going through something similar.

I have a great GYN who has been treating me for PCOS for about a year and a half now. I have been on and off the pill, but I decided in April to go off it for good--partly to maybe conceive, but mostly because I just couldn't take the side effects (mood swings mostly). In June, after a couple months off the pill, I asked my Dr. for another ultrasound, as it had been a while since I had one, and I wanted to see if anything had changed. She has the machine right there in her office, so she was happy to oblige.

Well, she found a cyst on my left ovary that was very round and about 17 mm big. No big deal, of course, as cysts are very common, especially with PCOS. So, she decided to wait a couple months and follow up on it. She looked at it in August, and it was pretty much unchanged, so she ordered an MRI to get a closer look at it. When the results from the MRI came back, they said that it was most likely an endometrioma or hematoma, and less likely a solid neoplasm. So, we decided to give it another month and do another ultrasound.

Had another ultrasound last month, and it was still there...maybe a little bigger, and slightly denser. So, my GYN is sending me to an oncologist on December 1st (that's the soonest I could get in). She says it's just as a precaution, but I am still pretty scared. She says that if it were an endometrioma or hematoma that it would normally have disappeared within 2-3 months tops, and it bothers her that she can't tell what it is.

Really, I just want the thing out, because I may need that ovary! But what has really been bothering me is that I haven't been feeling well these last several weeks. Actually, for a few months now, I have been getting super tired in the afternoon for no good reason. I was thinking it was due to blood sugar issues, because I eat a lot of sweets, so I've been really trying to watch what I've been eating. If I have sugar, I have protein with it, mostly is how I've changed my diet, since that what my OB recommended. I have cut back on the sweets, but not completely cut them out. But still, I get SO tired! I am definitely not pregnant, btw.

Also, in the last few weeks, I have been losing weight pretty quickly, without much change in my calorie intake or excercise routine. Usually, around this time of the year, I gain weight. I have been at about 143 for a while now, and then last week I weighed 139. Then today at the gym, I weighed myself and I was 136. Since I normally have a pretty stable weight, even when I try to lose, it's a little unsettling to be losing this weight without even trying.

Could all of this be because of insulin resistance, maybe? Or could I be having symptoms of ovarian cancer? This is going to be TMI, but also, in the last few weeks, whenever I sit for any period of time, my rear hurts, right at the end of my tailbone, like it's bruised. It almost feels like I'm constipated, but I'm not, usually. It actually hurts when I get up.

Oh, and also, my sex drive is almost completely gone. It has been diminishing over the last 6 months or so, but I have almost none to speak of now.

As I said, I go to the oncologist on December first, but I wondered if anyone around here had any thoughts on what was going on, or if anyone has similar symptoms or a similar experience?

Any comments you ladies have would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Teri

Hey, I don't really know myself what the symptoms are of ovarian cancer and I don't mean to worry or upset you, I REALLY don't, but my mother died of ovarian cancer when I was 13 and I think now that you are a little worried, you are soo right to get this investigated, because in the worst case, you can then begin taking the road to healing. I really hope you are healthy and that nothing is amiss but I did a quick search and this article might help you : http://www.baymoon.com/~gyncancer/li.../aa011001a.htm

Best of luck and keep positive - I'm thinking of you and also hope that you will be able to conceive very soon Luv,

Nolly x.

Teri, just wanted to say that I am praying for you. I hope that it turns out benign and nothing to worry about. You are in my thoughts. Good luck.

Teri, I also had a very large cyst. I think mine might have been a bit bigger but, my symptoms were just like yours. When mine got bigger my doc put me on the pill, it took about three months before it started to get smaller. I couldn't even sit it hurt so much. You could be insulin resistant. Cutting out the sugar and adding more protein can and will make you loose weight. Lisa

Thank you everyone for your support and your words. I am sorry I didn't reply earlier, as I was out of town for the holiday.

I'll be going to the oncologist this Thursday, and I'm getting blood work done on Tuesday to test for insulin resistance, so it's a start! I just want to get it all out of the way, and hopefully that will include finding out I am healthy!

I used to be on the pill, but I find the side-effects just unbearable. It kind of came down to choosing between the pill and my marriage, it made me so nutty. Hopefully they don't just stick me on that again. I do want to have a baby, so obviously we would need to find some other option. I hope it's not surgery, though, as I just got a bill for my MRI, and after insurance it was over $400! I can't imagine what surgery would cost...

I'll post again after I get my results, thank you all so much for putting me in your prayers, I really appreciate it!

Teri,

I am surprised they sent you to an oncologist for what you described because the oncologist will probably say the same thing, what it does or doesn't look like and the only way to know for sure is laparoscopy or laparotomy. Maybe your doc sent you because he/she doesn't do any surgeries?? Just curious because I have had two surgeries now for cysts that at first appeared to be part of ovary, I had all the symptoms you had at the time and they tried birth control and it didn't work either time because it turns out both cysts were attached to the outer part of the ovary in my case and both looked dense in scans and they always reported a "chance of neoplasm" but I never got sent to onco, just straight to surgery to just remove them because they were so large (like a grapefruit) and both turned out to be benign fibroadenomas which look a lot like cancerous ones in scans. Anyway I think your doc added some extra worry. BTW I was just diagnosed as having diabetes after having 20lbs total of unexplained weight loss, so get that checked too!!

Good Luck and let us know what happens, I truly hope it is benign!!

Julie

Please keep us posted! My thoughts are with you :o)

Have most of you had an ultrasound of your ovaries? I want to have one done to be on the safe side, but I don't have insurance.

Red face looks good!

Hi, guys!

Sorry I didn't reply sooner. Looks like everything's ok! The Oncologist seemed to think that it was the beginnings of endometreosis, but my regular GYN said she didn't agree with that. Still a mystery as to what it is, but the Oncologist said she was pretty positive it wasn't cancer so, whew!

Thanks to everyone for their prayers and support!

Love

Teri

I'm so happy it all turned out OK for you

I'm sure it's a huge load of your mind.

Are they going to monitor this in the near future?
