Default ovarian cancer (questions from a newbie, so please forgive any stupidity)

Hi,

Sorry if this is a dumb question. I've just been officially diagnosed with PCOS, and I don't know a whole lot yet. I've been reading these boards and have found so much great info!

My mother died of ovarian cancer just after her 41st birthday (diagnosed when she was 39). I think my great-grandmother had ovarian cancer as well, although later in life (she died soon after I was born).

My periods started at age 10, which is apparently a risk factor for ovarian cancer. With some family history of it, particularly my mother's young-onset cancer, I'm a bit worried about it.

Does having PCOS influence the risk of ovarian cancer at all?

Thank you

Emily

When I was looking into OC, I could not find a link between PCOS and OC.

What was so scary was that the symptoms of PCOS are almost the same as OC. That is why I thought they could be linked(eary searches)

Since your family has such a strong pressence of cancer, they should do additional testing for you. It is hard to get tested for oC because no one test shows cancer. The test they use also has a high false/positive reaction. This is why they don't want to use it. Plus it is VERY expensive and most insurances don't want to cover it.

I never could get a doctor to do the test.
My DR said there is a strict guide line they have to follow.
If your blood work doesn't have the beginning markers for cancer trouble, they won't do this test. Confusing I know.
So when I got the word I have PCOS, I felt better knowing it wasn't cancer. But this is just me.

Never give up your search. Keep digging.
