Default Ovarian Cysts?

I was just reading another new posters post & it occurred to me that I had said my ovaries are always normal via u/s. I once had pain near one side of my lower abdomen & my doc said it was probably an ovarian cyst. It was really painful & I went for a vaginal u/s & it must have just burst because we saw a lot of fluid. Is that the same as PCOS? I haven't been dx'd, just investigating before I approach my doc. Does "Poly" just mean more than one? My mom had ovarian cysts & actually had one removed while pg with my sister because it was getting really big. I can't believe I didn't associate these two occurrances. My mom has had weight problems & had trouble conceiving but ended up getting pg with both my sis & I naturally. She doesn't have any other symptoms though....hmmmmm. I also sometimes have pain with ovulation which I've heard is common after having children. I guess my question is, is there a difference between PCOS & the very seldom ovarian cyst? Thanks!

Hi, I'm new to having PCOS but I don't think having an ovarian cyst means you have PCOS. From what I understand when I was diagnosed it's just another symptom. The doctor explained to me that every month when you ovulate the egg actually forms in a cyst and then the cyst bursts and goes away (very small). When they don't burst and go away that's what is normal. The cyst I have is 10cm but she's expecting it to go away. Apparently this happens within 1-3 months of ovulation. Not sure if this makes any sense. I would ask your doctor, esp since your mom has symptoms. My mom does too but never was diagnosed. Now that I am, she's going to ask her doctor. good luck!

A large cyst is usually not PCOS, from what I have read. Doctors like to say that PCOS cysts are small and line up like a 'strand of pearls' - but that depends on how irregular your ovulation is really. Not every PCOSer has issues with ovulating, so not every PCOSer has cysts at all. And lots of women with ovarian cysts, do not have PCOS.

Ditto! I don't think I have cysts, but I do have PCOS. Some ladies will have cysts for a while, then have none. Some ladies have PCO (Polycystic ovaries) but do not have PCOS. What are your other symptoms? Have you had any tests run besides the scan?
