Default Ovarian drilling

My gyne told me today he recommends I get a laparoscopy, curette and ovarian drilling. He's going to check for endo as well and see what else could be causing problems.

I'm not TTC, and I do ovulate now but the pain I experience is unbearable and he said that this procedure would help with that.

I'm interested in hearing from others who have had this procedure and if you've had any success in reducing the symptoms at all?

Hi PuppyLove - I'm actually having the lap and possible OD on July 10th. Have you scheduled yours yet? My RE wants to check for endo as well and while she's in there "if it's in my best interest" she'll do the OD. She mentioned that if my ovaries are too small she wouldn't do it.

Hi Samiam

I'm not booked in yet, on a waiting list, the specialist thinks I should get in within a month, maybe earlier if there's a cancellation.

Because my u/s show a lot of cysts the gyno is confident my ovaries are very swollen and inflamed and would benefit from the OD.

Do you suffer from bad period pain? Are you getting it to help with ovulation?

My gyn/fertility doctor said she wants me to have ovarian drilling in August. I am trying to get pregnant and have been for almost 2 yrs. I have done 4 rounds of clomid 150 mg and have had an hcg shot as well and BFN. My doctor is not quiet sure why I havent become pregnant so she suggested that she take a look inside and because on my ultrasounds she sees cysts also and she thinks they might be causing the eggs to not be able to pass... Im curious is your insurance going to cover this procedure?

Hey there

Well I'm in Australia so things are a bit diff to USA (if that's where you are). The surgery isn't costing me anything as I'm getting it done publicly not privately. I don't have health insurance and was soo worried how much it was going to cost and the doc reassure me he can do it publicly and I won't have to pay a cent, thank god!

I'm going to ask him more questions as it seems most people get it done when TTC, which I'm not, so I'm a bit confuzzled!

puppylove - I would have said I never had awful period pain until this last month. I don't get regular periods or ovulate regularly so hopefully the OD will help with that. That's so great that you won't have to pay anything at all! We don't have that option over here unfortunately.

scuriel - insurance is covering my procedure because my RE is going to do a laparoscopy to check for endometriosis. She said while she's in there she'll do OD so I'm really hoping she does and that it helps. I've been TTC as well and have done clomid, multiple IUI's w/triggers, etc. I hope the OD helps you and you get your BFP soon.

Default drilling

Just wanted to reply with my response to OD.
The first month after surgery I didnt have any bleeding or ovulating, but the second month I had some light spotting on and off for three days. Then I got a period a week earlier than expected going by the normal 28 day cycles. This lastest the full five days, it sure wasnt as heavy as it was presurgery but it was more than just spotting. Now my period is 4 days late and I am having signs of ovulating now. So My cycles are still very messed up and confusing. Its going to be hard to TTC. but least I am having somewhat signs of ovulating and bleeding post surgery.

Hey Wishy

I hope your cycle settles soon hun.

Can I ask how long it took to recover from the surgery? Did you have a curette at the same time?

Hey there - had my OD last Friday along with a few other procedures. My RE decided to do a laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, and the OD and ended up finding more problems than expected. I had the OD which went well and she also removed a large cyst from my left O. Turns out I had endometriosis so she cleared that up and my uterine septum wasn't shaped correctly so she fixed that as well. I had a complete overhaul! As far as recovery I can't speak for recovery from just OD. I've had quite a bit of pain/discomfort and a lot of inflammation. Cramping was really difficult a few days after but as long as I alternate ibuprofen w/the pain meds I am ok. Good luck to the ladies that are deciding to do it! I'm crossing my fingers that it works but it's too soon to tell.

I had O/D done back in May of this year because I was not ovulating on Clomid or Femara (Letrozole). A few weeks after surgery, I ovulated on my own! I`m currently in my second cycle (D19) and wondering when I'll ovualte again...
If I haven't ovulated by my next DR's appointment (early August), he's putting me back on meds... (boo).
But so far the surgery did work -

Hi ladies

Well I had my surgery on Monday (2 days ago). They didn't find any endo which is good. The surgeon said my ovaries were huge and covered in cysts so she drilled 10 holes in each, and also did a curette, and laparoscopy.

Was in quite a lot of pain when I woke up in recovery and they gave me some morphine, god I wish I could have that stuff every time I get pain like that (which is every month!) She said she's not sure what's causing me so much pain and isn't sure the surgery will help with the pain or not (great )

I'm really hoping it WILL make a difference. So how did it take you ladies to recover from the surgery? I was told it would take about a week. The pain isn't too too bad, not as bad as I get every month so I can bear it. The after effects of the anaesthetic are probably the worst I think, and the after effects of all that gas that pump into you, ouch!

My tummy is ENORMOUS, soooo bloated, but that's normal after this procedure!

Be interested to hear how everyone is doing post op

PuppyLove - Pain from the gas was horrible, I agree! Thankfully the pain meds masked that most of the time. I still have a bruise and am a little tender. Did they not do a hysteroscopy as well while they were in there? Is your pain every month from cramping? My cousin had horrible cramping every month and it turned out that she had a large polyp on her uterus so she had a hysteroscopy in order to get it removed. That's great that they didn't find any endo though. Hope you are feeling better!

Hi ladies, I had a Lap with D/C, OD , Tube clearance and Fulgeration 6/19/09.. I didnt think it was a bad recovery for the amount of scrapping, pulling and pushing they do to your middle section.. I had my Surgery mid cycle and this month, did not ovulate on my own, I go next week for the start of Clomid again and he is adding on the metformin. Interestingly enough though, my U/S in May 09 showed follicles in each ovary, but didnt show any cysts.. my Cycles have always been 31 days but ive always had a crazy temp chart and was resistant to Clomid..My Op report stated he drilled roughly 20 holes in each ovary and that there were many small cysts( which didnt show on u/s at all)... my dr is very interested in my type of PCOS as my symptoms have been minimal except for the lack of ovulation... Thankfully.. Insurance WILL cover the Lap D&C, tube clearance and OD if your primary Dx is PCOD/PCOS, It will NOT be covered if your GYN/RE puts that you have Infertility or that you are Clomid Failure, So definately talk with your GYN/RE prior to surgery to get this squared away, Any good GYN/RE in youre best interest will make sure this is covered.. Good luck to you all!!!

Hi girls

Well it's 10 days since the surgery now and no more pain, yippee! No more post op pain I mean. The gas pain was definitely the worst because it gets trapped in different parts, yuk! Then had umm 'toilet' probs afterwards as well, I didn't take many pain killers so not from that, more from the anesthetic and morphine I think. Still getting tired/sleepy easily but I guess it's only 10 days since having a general anesthetic.

Follow-up appointment with the gyn on 7th September, they like you to have a period before you see them but also said because I had a curette it's likely I won't get one, so who knows. The bleeding from the op has stopped, was off and on for about a week.

So I'm really hopeful this op makes a difference to my pain!!
