Either your Dr can run blood tests to see if your hormone levels have jumped to the ranges of ovulation, or you can buy ovulation detector kits. I have never used one, but I understand they are pretty expensive, so maybe one of the cysters with experience using them can post and help you out.
Good luck and fingers crossed for you!

I am grateful that I have my daughter, I gave up on getting pg many years ago...I have tried everything except IVF because no one in town does it and frankly I can't afford it since it's not covered my insurance. Can that kit help in telling me if I will be getting my af? If you o do you automatically get an af?
Sorry for all the questions.

A kit will only tell you if you are ovulating, not if you will get your period. Because you can sometimes have one without the other, it indicates only if the hormones in your body have fluctuated to the levels of releasing an egg.
Another way you can tell if you are ovulating is by looking at your cervical mucous when you go the bathroom. It tends to go from white and sticky to something women call "eggwhite" because it looks like raw eggwhite. Your mucous can change due to other factors, but sometimes if it gets clear, stretchy and slippery when you are ovulating.

I've had a dull ache in my ovaries since starting met at the beginning of May that comes and goes. I agree with the suggestion to speak to your DR about it because you will want to have it monitored. I had a corpeus leuteal (sp??) cyst in Jan, the only O I've had in the last six years, and they monitored it by ultrasound to make sure it went away as expected. This is not something to mess around with, not to be alarmist but since they can see so much from an internal ultrasound it is worth doing it just to rule out another kind of cyst (like cancer.) Your DR can help you decide whether an ultrasound monitoring is necessary.
Back to your question, I've had an intermittant dull ache with the met that is very different from the pain I had with the cyst. I'm telling myself it is my ovaries beginning to function again! I'm definitely moodier than I've been, but appreciate the estrogen and look forward as you do to AF and eventual O.

Do you happen to know what the difference is between a CL cyst and the kind a lot of us have on our ovaries with PCOS? Thanks!

Thanks! | Yes, a CL cyst is the normal cyst left after your egg leaves the ovary, but in some cases it does not shrink as its supposed to after the egg fails to implant in the uterus. In my case, this hemmoraged (a scary sounding word for a natural occurance!) into itself and it was the bleeding that I felt. It was a sharp feeling in my side as I bent, was sitting too long, or exercised, but it was neither constant nor would I have described it as more than "uncomfortable" (but I'm a tough cookie ;-)).
The cysts on PCOS ovaries are egg follicles that have not released eggs (nor are going to I think.) It was doing the U/S for the CL cyst that showed my PCOS cysts and that plus the med history I had with my Gyno led to my DX.

If I understand the concept right, they are actually formed by blood from where cyst was released. They differ from the PCOS cysts in that it occurs after the egg releases and those PCOS cysts don't even mature.
Ok..think I got it. Thanks!
A CL cyst sounds painful...i'm glad yours resolved well, and I appreciate you mentioning your experience. Your post is a reminder that we should always be on guard when we feel any kind of reproductive pain.

I have had 5 surgeries to remove cystes on my ovaries since 1987, what is that cyst you talk about?
Are there different cysts? After so many surgeries, finally I went to a repo. endo told me that hey it's normal to have cysts.. you have PCOS....and that's how my dx came about.

Its responsible for releasing the hormones preparing the uterus for the egg. Quote: | If I understand the concept right, they are actually formed by blood from where cyst was released. Not a problem when they go away on their own as they are supposed to when the cycle completes either with AF or PG. Quote: | Your post is a reminder that we should always be on guard when we feel any kind of reproductive pain. | Thanks for your kind words, and apologies for the soapbox about checking on stuff but my grandmother and a good friend have both had ovarian cancer which they beat by catching it early enough. And I never dreamed I had PCOS because I thought it was all thyroid. Thank goodness for good DRs with good diagnositc skills.
I've had ovulation pain in the past too. I'm actually, as I may have alluded to in my earlier response, enjoying the achy sensation as I am thinking of it as the met doing its job. Met is doing great things for me already, so I am feeling patient as I wait for my hormones to come back into balance and bring me O.

Are there different cysts? | Selina,
Yes, some very normal as part of the process of ovulation, some not normal but benign, and some that signal a problem (cancer, endometriosis (sp?)). When I was DX'd with the CL cyst I did a web search on www.google.com on ovarian cysts and learned more than I ever wanted to know about my body. (like many of us with PCOS or TTC) I really recommend poking around some of the medical sites and looking at the illustrations, it took a lot of the uncertainty and fear out of the diagnosis for me.
