Hmmm...Sorry if this is a silly question but I'm still new to the PCOS thing.
Can I just ask how do I know when I am ovulating?
I get my period every month but it's a 35-40 day cycle.
Also, alot of members seem to refer to AF. Is this the same as ovulation?
As far as how to know if you're ovulating, there are various ways to tell without a doctor's help: You can monitor cervical mucus (when it becomes ample and is stretchy like egg whites, it's fertile and you're about to ovulate or are ovulating); you can chart your temperatures using a basal body temperature thermometer; or you can use OPKs (home ovulation predictor kits). OPKs turn positive about 12-48 hours before you are about to ovulate, but you should know that a lot of women with PCOS have difficulty using them because they have elevated LH (the hormone that OPKs measure) levels all the time.
I recommend reading, "Taking Charge of your Fertility". It's a really great book to help you through your TTC (Trying to Conceive) journey. It teaches you how to read your CM and cervical position and shows you how to temp. If you are interesting in temping, a lot of the girls here use FertiltyFriend.com. It's really easy to figure out but if you'd like, you can take free courses at the website. Good luck!

Does it matter whether I ovulate or not if I am not trying to get pregnant? I am just scared that I may lose bone calcium if my body does not ovulate as this will presumably mean I will not get my period without an ovulation.

You want to ovulate to shed your uterine lining. If you don't ovulate then the lining just builds up and that can cause problems later. You don't necessarily have to ovulate/have a period if you are not trying to get pregnant but you do want to "bleed" which is a period without ovulating...you just shed the uterine lining.
Do you get a period normally? If so then you should be fine. If not, your doc might consider provera or prometruim (progesterone supplements) to make you bleed (shed the lining) or have you on the pill. This would do the same thing...make you bleed once a month, shed the lining.
HTH and makes sense.

Hi everyone.
I would like to know: If I have regular periods (every 28-33 days) can I still have PCOS. The only other symptoms I know of are hair under my chin and I am 5'2 and 230lbs (overweight) YUK. I am supposed to get my sugar levels and blood work done next week, but can you still have a normal period and PCOS. I used a fertility monitor and by day 22 still hadn't ovulated. On the clearblue easy monitor it showed low for the first day (day 9) and high for the rest of the days, but no peak(meaning no ovulation). Can someone answer any of that for me? Thanks you gals are great!!!!
Becca- There are a lot of girls who have regular periods and have PCOS. If you click on my ticker, my monitor also reads as High and has yet to give me a 'peak' but I've ovulated. The CBEFM aren't always reliable with women with PCOS. This is why temping comes in REALLY handy!! Good luck!

I tried doing the temp thing one month and I was all over the chart. I don't think I charted correctly. Do you need to take your temp first thing in the morning?
Becca- You have to temp first thing in the morning at the same time everyday. I usually temp at around 6am and then go back to bed if I don't have to get up LOL
