Ovulation and conception during Pregnancy

Hi Ladies,

I know this is a stupid question and I think I know the answer to it also but I was just curious. Does anyone know that do we ovulate during pregnancy? Well if we do then can someone get pregnant again I mean can someone conceive during pregnancy. Is it possible that there is already one baby in the womb and another one is conceived about five or six months after that? Has anyone heard of something like that?

No, you don't ovulate during pregnancy and you cannot get pregnant while you're pregnant!

Think about it this way - the birth control pill works by fooling your body into thinking it's pregnant..and thus, does not ovulate.

I believe that even if a woman had a condition where she had two uteruses (uteri?) and two sets of tubes and ovaries, she still couldn't, because her hormones would prevent it.

That would be weird. "Honey, I'm pregnant." Pause. "Again."

Actually, my best friend two years ago found out she was pregnant and though the pregnancy was not viable, when they did the ultrasound they found there were two, however, they were actually 5 days apart, she ovulated, got pg, then 3 days later ovulated again and got pg again. She lost them but last December had a healthy baby boy. But we found out from her mom that is has happened in the family before, her great aunt used to ovulate twice, had two sets of twins and they were at least gestationally 5 days apart. I don't think it is possible to be into a pg for a few months and then it happens but you never know. My ex SIL had her period every month for the entire 9 months with all 5 of her kids, never knew she was pg till she started gaining weight and felt movement. Her mom and maternal grandmother were the same way. And they were regular periods, no change in them what so ever. So anything is possible.

Shellrenee, I've heard of that too. It's kinda freaky, actually. Actually another really weird thing is when that happens, but the eggs are fertilized by different men! Crazy!

I wouldn't necessarily say that's ovulating while pregnant, though. Since the second ovulation pretty much has to happen before the first fertilized egg has implanted, her body does not know about the upcoming pregnancy. Once the egg implants though, a woman wouldn't ovulate again.

But still, the whole "2 ovulations during one cycle" is really interesting.

That's true, the first egg hasn't had time to implant and I think that is when the body signals that it is time for ovulation to stop. But yeah, it still is freaky. That would be weird going and finding out you are pregnant, there are two of them but both by different dad's! How would you even explain that? Ecspecially if they were two different races! "Yes my kids are twins, but one is of one race and one is of the other" Too wild!

I've read that before as well. But I don't really consider it as ovulating twice, but rather more than one egg released in one go and perhaps one took longer to travel down than the other. You know...fraternal twins being dated by size as being a few days apart? Certainly they could be fertilized by different's men's sperm.

But for 5-6 mos apart... I think that's just too much time difference. You don't ovulate after you are already pregnant. I don't htink the hormones would allow it.

And having a bleed doesn't mean you ovulated. It is possible to have annovulatory cycles.

Oh wow. Thank ladies. I was thinking I would get a shower of stones from you all for asking such a question. Sorry if it sounded dumb but it was really great to hear so many new things. You know I am so obsessed with getting pregnant that I don't mind that happening either. Isn't that crazy. Though I like the 5 days apart part of it. I have heard of ovulation two times in the same cycle but that is mostly within 24 hours. isn't it?

Actually - it's not a dumb question at all. There have been rare cases around the world of babies being conceived several month apart. Two years ago I remember the story of an Italian woman on the television and newspapers here in Europe because she was carrying babies several months apart in gestation. I remember she was having a c section but I'm not sure if both were delivered at onece - I guess so. Weird!!!

The concept itself is not bizarre at all because cats and probably some other animals can get pregnant while pregnant. Cats can give birth to a litter of kittens who are different ages, although if the age difference is too great the younger ones won't survive. And the babies can have different father cats too.

However, this doesn't work for humans, which is probably why humans tend not to have litters of babies!
