I'm wondering if there is a difference in feel between ovulation and possibly a cyst causing some pain/discomfort? I know people feel and interpret pain differently...I'm just looking for some possible insight and/or experiences.
This is my first month charting and I'm only on CD 11 so I don't have much data to go on right now as to whether I may or may not be ovulating. I do have pretty regular periods (24-26 days, 28 max) but that doesn't necessarily mean I ovulate.
Anyway...I do get twinges...or pain/discomfort in the ovarian region and I'm just wondering if I might be able to learn the difference between ovulation (IF I am) and cysts causing it.

It depends which makes it all that much more confusing! Sometimes it'll be off and on throughout a whole day. But it doesn't seem to last long, just more frequent throughout the day--does that make sense?
Yesterday I had it last evening and it was sharper and lasted a little longer in duration. There was even one "twinge" where it actually felt like it radiated down my leg to my knee. My temp yesterday was 97.37 and it was 97.90 this morning (well above my coverline) so it *might* have been O pains yesterday...not sure.
It seems though like the pains I had last night were more sharp than the kind that come and go throughout the day.
I have been wondering though...will temp indicate Ovulation for a PCOSer...I mean, how do we know we actually released the egg instead of it forming another cyst?!

You get a functional cyst on your ovary during ovulation. Some ladies can feel this, while others can't, so it's really hard to say what is causing your pain.
My ovulation was charted using US for 6 months because of the extreme amount of pain I get. I would go to dr because my side was extremely tender and one of my ovaries would feel as if someone was squeezing it. US would be ordered, and would show a cyst on the affected ovary. Another US would be ordered for a week later to check on the cyst, and it would always be gone. Sometimes US would pick up fluid on the ovary where the cyst had ruptured.
I also can feel when the cyst ruptures. I get a sharp pain, like a pinch or stabbing pain.

I can actually tell 2 weeks before my period which ovary is doing 'it's thing'. I told my doctor that and she was very intrigued. Even before I started birth control and wad diagnosed with PCOS I could tell. It's a certain kinda feeling/pain, and it switches sides every month in a certain area... crazy. She did say I had 10-15 cysts on each ovary a year ago so that might have something to do with it? I have no idea. *shrug*

Hi -
I became a self titled fertility expert a few years ago when I was trying to get pregnant with my first son. (I have 2) So I hope this helps and encourages.
From what I recall a 24-26 day cycle is pretty normal and you are probably ovulating, at least on a good many of them. As to the pain of ovulation, I experienced a sharp stabbing pain in the lower abdominal region (off side near the ovaries) with both of the cycles that I became pregnant on. I was concerned, asked my doctor and he told me that 'sometimes ovulation can really hurt'.
All this to say, it sounds like a good sign to support you are ovulating. Are you using an OPK? I got pregnant using those and incidentally I was on metformin, to get the IR under control and it worked.
Thank you for the info! I am using OPK's but they haven't won me over yet--at all.
If you look at my chart http://www.tcoyf.com/chart.asp?id=jess1216 (when it asks for the password type in Baby Dreaming) I might explain why. I got 1 positive OPK on CD 7, but as you can see there is no temp shift. It wants to give me an O on CD 8 because of the OPK the day before. Yesterday is the much more likely day in my opinion (at least so far) because I had the possible ovulatory pains and my temp shot up. Of course I'll need more temps above my coverline to confirm...but this is my first month really charting...so it's a start! I got a negative OPK on CD 8, the day after the opsitive one...but my pee may have been more diluted.
Since I had the pain yesterday I tested this morning and this afternoon and both OPK's came up negative. I have no clue what's going on right now!!
I'd be in heaven if I am ovulating though...that would really give me a positive outlook on things come October!

Jess - you will see a temperature spike the day AFTER you ovulate. So if you had a positive OPK on CD 7 and then a spike on CD 8 then you ovulated on CD 7.

I can tell when it's ovulation pain - it's dull for a few hours on one side of my back, then it will be sharp. This alternating dull then sharp never lasts more than 15-20 hours though. If I hurt outside of that time when I should O, then I know something else is up. I am also lucky in that I always have a discharge on my O day.
Good Luck

hi ladies. i have question about o. i'm on cd 15 and i have pain from my left side all around to the left side of my back. The pain started on cd 13. Is that o or is this something else. My cycles are pretty normal 27 to 28 days . I'm so confused to what this pain can be?

I've been told ovulation pain should not last more than 24 hours, so that is what I go by. I can have dull aches for about 48 hours, but I will have sharp pain w/in a 15-20 hour period during ovulation.
If I were you, I'd write it down and see if it goes away a few days or if it gets worse.
Usually 600 mg of ibuprofen and heating pad makes me feel better during ovulation.
It's funny...ovulation pain is one of those pains I get excited about! LOL
