Hello everyone,
I was told 2 weeks ago that i have pcos. my ultrasound showed 20 'folicals' i think they called them. I am in pain everyday and i am always soooo tired. ive been trying to get information on what this means from the internet. all i understand is that it explains my weight gain and slight acne, and i might not be able to have children. What are the chances of women with pcos falling pregnant? Is it normal to gain weight, be in pain and feel constantly tired? is 20 folicals alot?? im sorry i know i have alot of questions but im just so scared because the doctors wont explain things to me and i want to know whats going on with my body. Is there a medication we're supposed to take? i was also told it only affects 6-7% of women.. so i thought id be alone through all this, but then i found this website... im glad i found you all, i mean im not glad that you all have pcos, but im glad that we dont have to be alone.
If anyone has anything at all that can help me, please let me know. my e-mail is igotsticks@hotmail.com or just reply on here.
pcos doesnt run in my family.. so how did i get it?
Thank you for reading, Bree!!

Hi Bree,
First off welcome to CS! Glad to have you here.
My cousin had pain with here polycystic ovaries and I know she took some shots that make the cysts "burst" (she btw has 2 kids now).
I dont know the severity of your problem, but sounds like you need to find a Doc that can answer your questions and work with you on therapy and so forth.
My endo says PCOS is genetic, so I would dig around your family history and see if any women have had problems concieving, cysts etc. For example I never knew my mom had the same problem in her 20s, till i had some PCOS symptoms and talked to her.
Hope this answers a little bit of your concerns, I am by no means an expert, but I try to read and ask my Doc as much as possible.
Glad you have found SC, look forward to hearing from you in the future!

I have MAJOR pain with my cysts. And women with pcos can have children but our weight is generally an issue for us when we try to concieve. The weight and the pain can make you tired, its not unusual. Hope this helps!!!
Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but glad you have found SC. It seems like I have / had similar symptoms to you - my obstetrician said I have more than 12 follicles on each ovary (more than 24), so yes, 20 is a lot, more than usual, but it doesn't seem unusual for PCOS. I also used to get a lot of continuous pelvic pain, in particular on my right side. I've had it for about 3 years now, although every now and then I will notice that it has gone away for a month or so - like just now!! No pain, yay! Also, I used to be very fatigued. I have started treatment with a low GI and GL diet (using the New Glucose Revolution books), daily exercise and the medication Metformin and feel soooo much better.
Like babyrose wrote, I think it is best to look for a doctor - maybe a specialist (endocrinologist and/or ob/gyn) - who could help you with explaining the condition and with getting the appropriate treatment.
I am the first one in my family to be diagnosed with PCOS, but I have a family history of type 2 diabetes - from my dad's side - which is where I have gotten the insulin resistance gene from. (If you haven't done a test for insulin resistance, it is probably a good thing to get done soon). Does anyone in your family have type 2 diabetes? Also, it seems that lots of women go undiagnosed for years, maybe even their whole life, so it is possible people in your family do have it.
All the best with finding a doctor and beginning treatment!
Michelle

Welcome! I'm sam and I'm also new on the site. I too have pelvic pain from time to time. I just want to let you know that I conceived without fertility help or even trying. Although I suffered a miscarriage at 10 weeks please know there is hope. It doesn't mean you can't.
Goodluck

hello all! Thank you so much to everyone who replied. Ive asked just about every female in my family if they have or have had PCOS or diabetes. They all said no, but they didnt make an interesting point that when they were younger there wasnt much information about all this. I am the only female in my family (besides kids under 15) who doesnt have kids on my own. my younger sister just had a baby 2 weeks ago, the same day i was diagnosed with PCOS. So i feel like i cant talk to anyone in my family because they are rapped up in the new bubs. Dont get me wrong, im so happy for my sis, and my new nephew means the world too me!! but its just so hard because i feel like its all bottled up inside. I work in a childcare centre because i really love kids but today i rang them and told them im taking 2 weeks off. Seeing all the kids there really makes me think and i get worried and depressed that i may never be able to fall pregnant. I know i really need to loose weight and try and get healthier, thats my main goal now.. but i just dont know where to start, ive been trying to loose weight for a very long time now and its just not working. I dont understand all this low carb, low GI business. I'm a very fussy eater as it is, and to have to change me eating habbits again is going to be really hard. SO i guess the next step now is to go see my doctor again, get tested for the other illnesses that come with PCOS, and then see a dietican who can put me on the right track. Does anyone feel kinda depressed? i get really bad mood swings and i just cant help them. I havent had a period all year but the pain i feel is almost unbearable! ALso, does anyone know how i can get some information on surragant monthers? Is it possible for me to do the IVF thing, mix my egg (do i have eggs?) and my fiance's sperm, and place it in another woman?
Thanks for taking the time to read this.. Bree

I think alot of us deal with depression and mood swings its all part of our hormones being of balance.
I think i was more depressed in my 20's compared to my 30's.
As far as surragacy, i think your doc will have other options for you to try. Like, some women you never had menstral cycles are able to have them by taking metformin. Some women were able to conceive on the same drug.
Good luck! Soul cycters is your best source of first hand info and a great place to find people who understand.

If there is nothing wrong with your uterus, cervix, etc. then there is no reason you couldn't carry your own child if you conceive. When it comes to infertility, PCOS is an ovulation problem, and there are a number of drugs the docs can give to help you ovulate. (Diet and exercise will also help). Then if there is no male factor to your infertility (or even if there is and it isn't too bad), then it is possible that eventually you will conceive when you have sex at the right time of your cycle. I don't see the need to talk about surrogacy with an ovulation problem - they still need to make you ovulate for surrogacy, and that is half (or maybe even more than half!!) the battle won if they can do that.
Bree, I think taking some time off work is a good thing to do for the moment - just to give yourself a bit of a break and time to sort out stuff in your head... I know the feeling... I think I cried for about a month or so after I found out I have PCOS. Then it all settled down... I read stuff - success stories about PCOS-people getting pregnant and having healthy children - and books about how to manage PCOS and I felt sooo much better. I reminded myself again and again that God is in control and I can bring my worries to him in prayer and he hears them... such a comfort for a time like this.
I recommend you grab a copy of 'The New Glucose Revolution - Managing PCOS' book. I think you said you live in Australia in another post? The authors are the leading experts on PCOS in Australia. The book is great, very helpful, very reassuring. It will help you understand what you should eat, and what exercise is good for you as well.
Hope this helps,
Michelle

Thank you so much to everyone who has replied.. Thanks for the advice on the book Michelle, yeah i live in aussie land so i'll look around for it. The reason im thinking about surrogancy is because i have had to many m/c and i really couldnt deal with having another one! So i thought it would just be alot easier and i lot less heartache if i looked into the surrogancy options. The baby would still be completly my fiances and mine.. its just like renting a womb for 9 months ..hehe
Oh, Bree, I didn't realise you had had m/c's!! So sorry to hear that!
I know that many docs keep PCOS-ers on metformin for at least the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, because it can significantly reduce the chance of m/c. I read something about it on this forum - I don't know if I have the stats right (someone plz correct me if I am wrong!) - but I think it said that metformin reduces the 45% chance that cysters have of m/c in the first 12 weeks to something like 9%!! So maybe metformin could work for you??
Here's to hoping...
Michelle
