Panic Disorder/Anxiety Thread? Anyone want to join?
I hope its ok to post this here. I know a lot of us have issues with anxiety and panic and thought maybe starting a thread for it would be good. Anyone else up for it?

Sounds good - count me in.
What could be the current topic? Like tips that have helped with one's anxiety....or meds....or....does visualization really help.....
Has anyone read "The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook" by Edmund J. Bourne? I bought it recently to look over due to the stress and anxiety I have been feeling. It is good, but seems to require a lot of different techniques.
For example, for generalied anxiety disorder, it suggests:
Relaxation (who wouldn't want that?)
Exercise (strongly recommends weight lifting and aerobics)
Self-talk
Dealing with Mistaken Beliefs
Expressing feelings
Working on self-esteem
Maintaining good nutrition (specifically, no sugar and limiting caffeine)
Optional: Pursuing spirituality and finding a life purpose
Optional: Learning to be assertive
Interestingly, a lot of the individual boards on here can be mapped to these techniques. (i.e. Relaxation = Getting to Know you; Expressing Feelings = Poetry; etc.)
Its been a good read so far.

KilikinaP, I have that same book and like it also. My GP recommended it, that's one thing she's done right The techniques that are used do overlap with each diagnosis which is a little frustrating. I tend to use it when I'm trying to prevent a MAJOR panic attack. If I'm in the middle of a major one...forget picking up the book and reading through it, or sitting down and breathing through it, or just letting your body go through it. If it's a major one, I'm uncontrolable and I just know I'm dying, can't breath, tingling all over and so on. I like the questionaires and the insight to your childhood that it brings. (I'm sure I should be in counceling) I've recommended it to several people and they all seem to get something good out of it. Take care.

I have SEVERE panic disorder and anxiety attacks. This year with the divorce has made things worse but they have always been there. My psychiatrist has me on very high doses of klonopin and xanax plus a few others just so I could stop having freak outs in the office. My psychologist taught me some breathing techniques that can help:
The easiest is to take deep breaths and hold them for 5 seconds and then slowly release. This will sometimes work instead of doping up too much. I had one Saturday and the breathing stopped it. I couldn't believe it.

I'm going to share what my therapist and I do once in a while.
She has me close my eyes and visualize this beam of light, going through each area of my body, down to my toes, then after sitting with it for a while, it begins to slowly move back out of my body and mind, from my toes to the top of my head--while.....dragging with it, all the black, gooey anger, anxiety, tar-like (I picture black) negative stuff that makes me anxious and sick, and as it reaches the top of my head, it first turns into a pencil thin object, then slowly disappears---TAKING all that stuff with it.
I have so many things that I MUST do. If I don't, I end up incredibly anxious. I usually just give in to it, even though it sucks up a major portion of my day. Hubby gets incredibly frustrated with me.
I don't know if it usually goes along with Bipolar, but I'm Bipolar II, and when I'm manic, the OCD is worse.

That's funny you gals mentioned the anxiety workbook by Dr. Bourne; I pulled it out of a box in my closet last night. I love it! I carry that big ol' book with me whenever I fly. I must look ridiculous! But anyway I love that part about people with anxiety disorders are always on high alert for some little disturbance in their body. That is so true with me, if I feel dizzy or "off" for a few seconds I can usually end up in a full-blown panic attack because I'm convinced it's a heart attack or stroke or something catastrophic!

Jax, hubby and I were both tested for HIV before we got married. But then, for some reason, I was convinced for two years that I had it anyway (my ex was a slimy cheat). I spent that entire time too afraid to go get retested! Of course, once my doc checked, I was fine.
The games our minds can play!
