Exclamation Pap smears

hey all,
i am bisexual and have been with my female partner for over three years and sexually active with her for two. my 18th bday is in just over a month. here we have ads saying if you are over 18 or have ever had sex you need a pap smear. however all the docs seem to have a different opinion and i am confused!

the doc at the sexual health clinic said that i did not need one if i had only had sex with a woman, but since i recently had sex with a man that i should come back in two years. then the doc my mum asked said if my partner had previously had sex with a man than i would need one.

im really kinda pissed off with how the first doc treated me. she said that pap smears are manily done because the warts virus can be passed on from a man to a woman and can cause cervical cancer. but she asked me absolutly no questions about my sex life, and if we shared toys and practiced safe sex (which we totally dont!!) and just said i couldnt get it. it annoys me that i am denied the same medical treatment as a hetrosexual woman.

so yeah any info would be good. what are your previous experinces with pap smears?

cheers
Sonia

Oh my! That's wrong. Every woman is to have pap smears checking for cancer. That has nothing to do with whether or not you have been with a man. My sis had to have one when she first entered nursing college... she was a virgin then. My Mom still gets them after she had uterine cancer and my Dad died in 1979.

So sorry you were treated like that,
Tori

i competely agree with tori, smear tests should be done, regardless of whether you're having sex at the moment, who you're with or whether its considered "safe" sex. This is a test for many things, including cervical cancer which is not dependant on orientation. go to a docor and get one done, as all women should do.

most docs just do them when they are needed. sorry you got an idiot. i know there is a link between hetero sex and cervical cancer but you definately still should have been checked. i got my first pap when i was 14 (i was still a virgin) just to make sure that wasn't the reason why i didn't have af. that office never found the pcos (didn't get diagnosed for 12 more years). i hope you find a doc who isn't a total idiot.

passing from man to woman is something called HPV , human papaloma virus that CAN if not followed lead to cervical cancer ( they are pre cancerous cells left after contracting HPV) BUT you should get one anyway if you are putting anything up there who knows what kind of celular changes could be trigered. (not to be blunt, for lack of a better way of saying it LOL ) and just the simple fact that you DO have a cervix you should be checked, I think 18 is a good age to start that.

I have to say I think it's so great over in the US how they promote this, here in the UK they don't even consider it for people who have not had sex... regardless of the age...

I cannot believe that a doctor could be so ignorant! Every woman needs to have the same medical care, regardless of thier sexual preference...and BTW a friend of mine-who has NEVER been with a man-contacted HPV from her gf when the gf cheated on her...and now she has cervical cancer.

baby- wow that's horrible. i am glad they found it. i have a friend who is only about 25 who also has it and now she can't have any more kids because they had to remove her uterus to keep it from spreading. i can't believe some docs won't do such a basic test. if you are going to the gyno, they should do a pap. they're down there anyway.
