Red face Paragard copper IUD Problems? (possible TMI)

Hello, I'm new here, so I hope I'm posting this in the right place. I got Paragard inserted in July 2008 and ever since I have spotting/bleeding almost every day. I went back to my Dr a month after having it put in, and she didn't seem to think it was an issue other than the "inconveniance". I'm still having the issue though, and it is quite frustrating. Some days are heavier than others, but I rarely have a whole day with no bleeding. I also experiance a lot of clots. (sorry for the TMI) DH and I want to wait until next spring to start TTC, and I've never been pregnant. I'm like many other girls here trying to lose some weight before TTC.

Should I go back to my Dr.? She didn't seem concerned and I felt as if I was bothering her.

Should I get a new Dr.?

I'm sick of dealing with this issue.

Any advice or feedback is welcome.

Thanks. -K

Exactly the same happened to me. Had one inserted May 08 and had it removed December 08. Too much pain, cramping, clots and everyday bleeding, even whilst on the pill. It was really irritating my womb, and so more lining was shedding than needed. and more frequently. I don't think this is too good for you, especially if you start ttc as your womb lining could become too thin for a fertilized egg to attach...

To be honest I would have it removed, it would make you feel much better. This is common in women who haven't had children.

Change doctors if the current one isn't taking you seriously. xx

Thanks Ashley, I sometimes feel bad for complaining to my Dr. about this stuff, and when they don't take me seriously it makes feel like I'm just being too picky... I think I will try a different Dr. and see about getting it taken out. The other problem is, without the IUD, figuring out what to do for birth control. I don't really want to do BCP's again, because they give me migranes and I always gain weight, not to mention the mood swings. Maybe DH will just have to wear condoms haha.

Go to a new doctor. Persistant bleeding (heavy or otherwise) can put you at risk of an iron deficiency, which isn't good, especially if you are going to TTC in the near future.
I'm about to investigate the IUD but I'm a bit nervous because they say women who have had children handle it better.

UGH! Finding a new doctor is really turning out to be a pain. I just had one receptionist tell me it's normal to bleed daily with an IUD and that I don't need to see a doctor about it! That was of course after she told me that I should be seeing the Dr. that put it in.

Receptionists aren't supposed to give medical advice!

It is normal to have some irregular bleeding for the first month as you body adapts, but when it gets past 3, 6, 9 months, it actually does do harm. Iron deficiencies etc, plus it is exhausting and inconvenient. I really would just demand to see a doctor and demand to have it removed. Doctors are not allowed to refuse a removal of an IUD, I know this as a fact, it's part of the rules! Even if there was no problem and it was just a woman not "feeling right" about it. It must be removed if she requests so.

Be pushy! xx

Thanks Ashley, I did get an appointment with a different doctor for June 8, hopefully this one will be helpful. I def agree that it's probably not good to bleed and pass clots every day for 10 months!

I don't know if this applies all around the world, but not all doctors are 'registered' to deal with IUDs at my practice. There is only the one doctor who has taken the courses or whatever they do and if anyone has wants anything done with an IUD they have to see her or find another doctor at another practice.
So in that instance they would refuse to deal with it, and its probably best for the patients safety too.

The same thing happened to me. It was awful. I bled nonstop from insertion to removal. Once, I went to the mall, and on the way back I soaked through a new "maximum protection" giant size maxi pad and a super tampon... in like an hour! It was so bad that I sneezed and a burst of blood shot up through my undies and soaked through my jeans on top! And I was having giant clots and could barely get up and around because I was so worn out... so I had it removed.
