Default paranoid about hair loss

Hi everyone,

I've been lurking for a while but finally registered. I'm not officially diagnosed with pcos, but my doctor said that's what it seems like I have and sent me to an endocrinologist. I was on birth control last year for a while, but when the prescription ran out, I didn't go back, and I'm on nothing now.

Anyways, I've finally come to terms with the facial hair and the fact that I also have rosacea (my face is always deep red, there's even a spot of purple...sometimes this gets me down, but I've lived with it for a long time), but now I think I might be losing my hair. I'm so worried, but I can't even tell if I really am or not -- I've always had a large forehead, and it's not like things have drastically changed, but it just seems thinner on top. But not enough for people to notice yet (at least, I don't think so...). Should I start using rogain or something, just in case? Is this one of those things where if you lose the hair, it's almost impossible to get it to grow back, but if you catch it before it falls out, you can prevent the loss?

Also, when did all of you start having hair loss? I'm only 20!!! If I were a *guy* it would be freaky enough! I hate pcos.

Thanks
Btal

Hi Btal and welcome to Soulcysters. Hair loss for women can start at any age and can be very discouraging. I'm 30 and I just started losing hair this past summer. Hair loss is treatable and reversable. There are several options out there. I have included a few links to some other info I have posted in this forum, I hope it can help you to find the right treatment for you. If you have any questions please ask. PM me anytime you want to talk.

Unhappy hair loss HELp

I was diagnosed with PCOS 2 weeks ago, though im sure i had it for many years now. Tommarow morning i see an endocronologist for the first time (im sure i spelled that one wrong)....anyhow i can not fall asleep,, as i was brushing my teeth i noticed the hair on the top of my head becoming even thinner then before,,,its as if the the top hairs are hanging by a few threads,,,,And it took me so long to grow my hair,,i noticed it thinning about 3 weeks ago and now it is totally out of control...and Im only 22....Im sure its from PCos,,but it can also be stress added to it, because 3 months ago and till this day I have been in pain from an injury from a race,,,so this is just the icing on the cake for the hair loss,,,,Anyway i hope the endo doesnt suggest birth control pills cause i have been on and off of them since i was 16,,never on any one to long because i always hated the side affects,,from the tiredness, to be extra hungry, bloating and weight gain,to the breakthrough bleeding, to the horrible depression it gave me. i actually stopped taking them in the middle of the pack because i was bleeding everyday(sorry for the gross detail),,,,i went to my gyno and he said "i dont care what you do flip a coin ,,,,so i stopped taking them and my moods went back to normal ,, But i havent had my period in 7 months so I am desperate to get it back)( any suggestion for the safest and least side affect way to get my period again>? and any quick fixes for the hair loss? THis is terrible im going bald before my befriend,,,,...i can feel the air hitting my scalp it is so thin HELP

Hi ladies,

I am new to all of this myself. I was just diagnosed about 2 weeks ago as well. I am 28 and have had symptoms for about 20 years now. I am also seeing some hair thinning.

I have read where some women start growing hair back once the are on the low carb diets and/or meds.

As far as BCP - I hate them. I gained 30 lbs in 3 months on them! That was the start of my major PCOS problems. There are a lot of different meds and alternative treatments so make sure when you go to your Dr. that he/she gives you all of your options. I will be going in the next month I hope, I will have to see when I can get in, and I will be armed with questions and knowledge! I have been doing some of my own research so I will be as prepared as possible. BCPs aren't the only answer.

Hang in there, it isn't fun having this, but am happy knowing what I have and that there is something I can do about it. Feel free to drop me a line when you need support - this is a great place to do it! There is so much support and information.

Take good care!

Personally I don't think bcp's help at all. It's proven that the extra (artificial) estrogen in bcp's make insulin resistance worse.

Keep reading Sunflower, there's lots of information here about healing your body and getting your periods back.
