Well i am 16 years old and I believe i have PCOS, but i wanted a second opinion before i asked my dermatologist. I got my period when i was 14 but they have always irregular very random sometimes i won't get them for a very long time(no risk of being pregnant). I have bad facial hair expecially my upper lip i get so embrassed about it I don't even know what to do. I've tried everything and i have unsual acne. Do you think this is PCOS? please tell me if you do. This is very hard subject for me to bring up even with my own mother she just ignores me so this is very hard for me to discuss with a doctor. So I will only ask if i think I really do have it (which i think i do).
HELP please i hate having all thses things worng with that normal girls my age don't so if you could it would very much apprciated
thank you
it's hard to say for sure, sorry. not too many of us were dx'd as teens...to a certain extent some of what you are going through is considered "normal" teenage stuff, and many dr's (and parents too) tend to look at it that way. periods can be irregular for the first year or two before your hormones settle down a bit. do you keep track of how often you have your periods? have you ever had your hormones checked? I know it's hard for you to talk to your mom about this stuff, but is there someone else that you feel comfortable talking to about this sort of thing? the more info you have when you go to the dr or when you try to talk to someone about what's going on, odds are they will take you more seriously.
good luck, and I hope you get some help soon. the teen years are hard enough to get through without PCOS getting in the way.
I agree, when I was your age I had the same problems. The doc always brushed it off as "Your just a teen you will regulate yourself sooner or later." The best thing to do is just go to your doctor, AND DO NOT be scared to ask any questions. Now is the time to find out anything on your mind. That was always one of my problems, I didnt want to question my doctors. The best thing they could do is some blood work and maybe even an US (Not sure if that will matter, sometimes it helps, sometimes it misleads doctors). Well, if you ever have any questions feel free to ask!!
Personally, my feeling is that YOU know your body better than anyone else. If you really feel that it is not normal, I don't think it would hurt to bring it up to your doctor and ask him/her to test for PCOS. I think if YOU tell the doctor you think you have it, he/she will be less likely to brush you off for the plain fact that you could be right and they don't want to find out later down the road that they should have listened to you and didn't. Even if the doctor is so bold as to tell you that you don't have anything wrong with you, you could tell him/her (politely) that you'd still like to have some blood work done just to be sure that everything is in order.
