Default PCOS & african american hair

Any tips for african americans with PCOS and hair loss?

my hair seems to grow very well for a few months then begin breaking in the back no matter what I do with it! With advice from my hair stylist, I have recently gone "natural" for the first time by letting the relaxer grow out of my hair and it seems to be helping somewhat, but I just started doing this about 2 months ago! I keep my ends trimmed and I use "carol's daughter" hair products which I purchase online!

Yeah, im letting my curly texture come back and right now it is appearing healthier and stronger! Just hopes it stays that way! Trying to keep it moisturized and conditioned! I think that helps

Congrats on going "natural"! I got my last relaxer in August of 05 and haven't looked back! My hair is definitely thicker and it grows sooooo fast! I did the "big chop" last November, and now my hair is longer than it was before I cut the relaxer off! I alternate from straightening it (blowdryer and medium flat iron (not scorching hot), and use Frizz Free serum to smooth it from being so bushy - folks think I have a relaxer), and wearing my fro-ny tail (kinda long for a fro, kinda pony tailish).

I'm wearing kinky twists now, and might do other braids after I get these out...but you'll be amazed at how much better your hair grows after you cut the remaining relaxer off! Good luck!

i am also a african american sister. I would also like to eventaully go natural but I would just hate the beginning phase. I guess I could try braids but I haven't had them in so long because my hair doesnt' do well with them. Its been about 5yrs since I had braids maybe I can give it another try

Well, my "big chop" wasn't so big! Let's see, my hair was shoulder length when I got my last relaxer, and I waited 14 months to cut the relaxer off...so my hair had gotten pretty long before I chopped. When I did chop, my stylist said that I had about as much natural hair on my head than I did the part she was cutting off, so I never wore a twa (teeny weeny afro).

The first month I only wore it natural, then I went to an awards ceremony with my pastor so I flat ironed it...my hair was about ear length. A week later I got my hair done for my job's formal (the dress up picture in my sig), and it was about to my chin. Now (a year after not so big chop) it's just past my shoulders.

While I'm definitely not the "natural queen", I may be able to answer some basic questions if someone has them. I have a pretty dry scalp, and am having a bit of a time keeping my scalp moisturized with these twists...and I'm sure it's not helping that it's getting wintry here in Michigan.

God Bless my cystas!

Im glad to hear your hair is doing so well Leah! Im gettng microbraids or either cornrows to help with the transition! Been told to use a pressing comb in between braiding styles so hair would be easier to braid. I need a good conditioning regimen though!

I dont have any friends that are "natural"; they think im crazy for doing it but if I keep get relaxers, my hair will stay in this condition! How can you tell if any relaxer is left in your hair?? I didnt think to ask my hairstylist! is it better to cut it all down to the new growth?

do you know of any websites on taking care of natural hair??How do you keep the hair around your temple/kitchen area straight for different hair styles!!?

Hey Ladies! I did the big chop in May after transitioning for 6 months. My new hair was so dry and damaged from me flatironing it during the transition, that I took my clippers and left myself with about 1/2 inch of hair in late September. I also recently colored it. I LOVE having natural hair. So, while you transition, PLEASE remember to deep condition.
Some tips:
1. Eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of water
2. Take a multivitamin (I experienced some shedding, but once I started taking a super duper ultra megavitamin, the shedding stopped. I'm kidding on the name of the vitamin, I used Alive or GNC)
3.Deep condition regularly (like once a week at least), and use protein treatments regularly (I was told every 6 weeks or so)

GApecantan--
4. Check out motowngirl.com for natural hair advice and longhaircareforum.com for hair advice. There is lots of info on these sites!

I will post more information if I find it!

Hey!

I wear twists too. I've worn my hair natural for 5-6 years. I cut it all off to get rid of the perm.

If you want twists, wash it and condition it and while it's still wet part it seperating it into sections. Then start with a braid but after 3 or 4 rotations split the hair into two strands and twist it. Smooth the hair while you are twisting it by rubbing a product on it such as lock and twist gel, or hair fudge by Perfect Results or even shea butter. I redo mine every week.

For flaking and shedding, that is a hormon condition brough on by the PCOS. I have tried tons of shampoo. The most effective is Nioxin and Nisoral. They both have a web presence and they are both very, very effective. The Nioxin will reduce the shedding to almost zero, and the Nisoral will correct the scalp hormonal imbalance that starts the shedding.

Much luck.

I went natural a few years ago and wore braids for a few years. Then decided not wear them for a while and my hair was a pain to maintain between working out and traveling non-stop for work so I put a relaxer in. Now I'm transisting again. I cut the relaxer out so I have about 4' natural hair. I wear braids 90% of the time (individual braids so I can style) or twists
  • As a PP said deep condition your hair and give it protein treatments
  • Even if your hair is in braids wash it. I wash my hair weekly and condition (If I have synthetic hair I deep condition/hot oil treatment)
  • Moisturize your hair
  • If you wear braids know your hair. I can't wear braids for more than 6 wks max before I completely take them out. Longer and my hair starts to knot up and thin. Plus since I wash my hair often it starts to frizz. Don't let them braid your hair tight if it hurts make them stop. I wore braids for 3+ years and my hairline stayed intact until a combination of hormones going all over the place and getting lazy about leaving braids in started breakage. Luckily it has grown back and I don't have to face a future of a receding hairline like Susan Taylor
  • Take a multivitamin, I also take Biotin

susan taylor definitely has the worse receding hairline I have ever seen on a woman! all those years of cornrows really did her an injustice!

I think im going to chop a few more inches off to make my hair even all around and wear different styles of braids and twists until my hair gets back to at least shoulder length! I'll check out those sites, but by all means, keep the good hair info coming, this is truly a transition for me! Thanks ladies!

hi GApecantan my hair breaks off in the back too but its from psoriasis........certain times of the year ( hot weather) I can not have my hair touching my neck
(very annoying)........my hair stylist actually recommends that I see a doctor and treat the psoriasis.......(its at the back of my neck right at the hair line on the left side)

Have you tried using "Do Grow" products? I use the growth oil in the area were my hair came out or rather broke off at....OOH and I've also heard of Carole's Daughter's Product, I hear they are very good.........do they have a hair growth oil? if so try that one

GOOD LUCK TO YOU

You are so right about Susan Taylor!!! she is a beautiful woman but she needs to leave those cornrows alone....its making her forehead look huge!!!

Actually GApecantan I kept my hair in braided styles for almost a year and it worked I got my shoulder length hair back!!!

I'd take the braids out shampoo/condition it and get it braided again.....
