I saw a new doc today and she put me on Sprintec, which I believe is generic for Ortho Cyclen I think. Is Ortho Tri-Cyclen different? Anyway...I have done research on PCOS for a couple of years and this is actually my 2nd doc. The last one I just didn't like. I was told today by this new doc some information that is not up to par with what I found in my own researching and while I am following her orders, I am some what reluctant.
She told me that she starts all her patients on this pill before trying others because it's the one she likes the best. Also because she said it's the cheapest one you can get and I am self pay. I asked her if I was willing to pay more for it, would there be a different pill she would recommend and she said no that she would prescribe the same.
Until this point, I had thought that Yaz or Yasmine were the ones that were best for PCOS. I asked her about this and she said they were no better or worse but she did not like them because of something in them...she did not go into detail about what that was.
I also told her that a few years ago I was on Ortho Tri-Cyclen and I gained a ton of weight and she said that birth control does not make you gain weight, it's eating and lack of exercise and insulin resistance that causes weight gain. I didn't argue because I couldn't say I eat well and exercise regularlly.
Another thing she told me that the low dose pills were not suited for overweight people because there was a higher risk for pregnancy because of the low dosage and it was less effective because of excess weight.
I am gonna try it her way and see what happens...she has ordered lab work, a saline infused ultrasound, and a biopsy in the next couple of weeks. She wants to do the tests before putting me on Metformin but says most likely she will. This is the first doctor I have seen that has been willing to spend the time with me and really dig in and see what's going on. But like I said, I still feel like some of what she said doesn't go along with what I have read and I know you can't believe everything you read but it's hard to shake off the stuff you thought was true.
Anyone take Ortho Cyclen or Sprintec? I would love to hear your experience with it and how it did or didnt affect your PCOS. What do you guys think about different BCPs being better for PCOS?

I am on ortho cyclen and I have been on it for about 5 years (I am 22 now). I tried Yaz and it didnt work very well with me. I had horrible mood swings and it put me into a depression. From what I have learned different medications have different effects on people. I was young at the time but they had put me on an anti-depressant. Once I had enough knowledge about PCOS I asked my DR to switch my BCP ( I am against masking a side effect of one pill by taking another!) So to say the least they changed my pill and it has worked well for me. It's not something that I intend on staying on for long but in the meantime I am doing fine. Thankfully, I am not IR but I have weight issues and irregular periods (obviously the pill regulates them). Besides that it helped clear up my skin. I am hoping to get off the pill soon because I would like to take a more natural approach.
Hope this helped a little.

Im located in Owensboro too. Ive been trying to find someone in the area for a while... Do you mind telling me what doctor you are seeing now? I was diagnosed with PCOS about 3 years ago and have been hesitant to go back to my doc. too... She is sooo busy, i feel she has no time for me. Ive just recently started to see alot more symptoms and am desperate to find a good doctor so i can get this thing under control!
When first dx with PCOS back in 01, the doc at school put me on Ortho Tri Cyclen. Years later I had a doc give me the generic - Tri Sprintec and it worked the exact same.
I'm personally wary of docs that give birth control pills as a "first" treatment for PCOS...it did nothing for me but mask my symptoms and caused crazy side effects when I came off them (lots of weight gain, vision loss, etc).

Hi Owensboro ladies! I'm in Louisville. Anyway, I have been on generics for Ortho Cyclen for many years. I have had multiple health care providers tell me that Ortho Cyclen is way better for PCOS than Ortho Tri Cyclen. Apparently the idea is that the tri phasic pills do not offer enough hormones in all 3 of the phases to help with PCOS symptoms. The Ortho Cyclen is a mono phasic pill, so the hormones are consistent throughout, guaranteeing you will get enough of what you need to help with PCOS symptoms. I have tried a variety of other pills, and I always go back to Ortho Cyclen. It works the best for me.
I recently switched from yasmine to Ortho Cyclen because my new ob-gyn said it would be "worth a shot" to see if this more "hair friendly" pill helped with the alopecia. I have only been on it for 2 1/2 to 3 weeks now, but I am breaking out like crazy and my hair is falling out worse than ever. Now I understand that if something is helping the hair loss a dread shed typically occurs, but I am freaking out and I wanted to know if anyone has experienced something similar and if so, did it get better?
I've taken tri-sprintec for almost 3 years now, and it's great. I tried switching to yaz and it was DISASTER! I got horribly depressed, moody, gained weight, brain was all foggy and worst: It caused SEVVVVVVVERE ACID in my tummy. Don't know why but as soon as i took it, I was just sick. And as soon as I stopped it, it went away. But Tri-Sprintec has worked for me, no side effects. But my skin isn't 100% clear and I still have symptoms but it's also really cheap...only $3 a month for me
I took Sprintec for the longst time and it worked wonders for me. I actually lost 60 lbs on the bcp!!! Sadly though, DH and I want a kid and I put all that weight back on. Sometimes, I really do hate my ovaries...
