I thought it was fairly certain that insulin resistance goes with PCOS hand-in-hand. My primary care doc diagnosed me with PCOS a year and a half ago, and I have been fighting to get tested for IR ever since. It finally took getting a new doc.
Anyway, got my results today and I am not insulin resistant! Fasting insulin was 7. Does that mean maybe the PCOS diagnosis was wrong? Other than menstrual irregularity, I have very few symptoms of PCOS and they are pretty mild.
My fasting glucose was 80 (normal) and two-hour glucose was 160 (a bit high), if that matters in any way.

No, you don't always have to have IR to have PCOS. Sometimes IR causes PCOS, sometimes PCOS is related to IR, but sometimes IR just doesn't happen. It's likely you still have PCOS (but from my perspective, lucky you don't have IR! ).

Thanks! I guess I was more confused than I thought.
Yes, I think it's good not to have IR. Now I'm hoping I can control my sugar levels with diet and exercise...my doc gave me 4 weeks to monitor it and work on it and then we'll have another appointment. *sigh*
Seems like it's always something!!

I also have PCOS but am not IR. It makes no sense. I'm not on Met but have my first Endo appt on the 11th so hopefully he'll put me on Met as I've heard it's beneficial for both IR and non-IR PCOS patients.

Hi Diana, I'm in the same boat. I was recently diagnosed with PCOS....but I think my insulin levels were mostly normal. So for now, she's just starting me on Spiro and BC. I feel like I should be insulin resistant because of rapid weight gain the past few years, plus my father is diabetic. I will probably follow up on that...and my doc wants to keep testing me every few months or so.
But anyway as my Endo put it....she said there are many factors that are a part of PCOS, you don't have to have all the standard issues to be diagnosed with it. I'm still a bit confused on all of it myself and will have more questions for her.

I'd be interested to know if your doc prescribes Met to you. My Endo didn't offer Met for me....I assumed because I'm not IR or Diabetic. But I honestly would like to try it just to help with the weight loss dept.

After everything I read and the article in the Met forum, I'll print it out and show him if that's what it takes. lol Met is said to help realign the hormones (and of course, I'd love it to help me lose some weight even if that is not its main job). If he doesnt allow it or offer it to me, I will be switching Endo's. It will not kill me (hopefully not ) to try it and if it helps me, why not? I'll keep you posted.
