PCOS common ailments The thread about common ailments of PCOS’ers, where it seems many of us suffer from a bunch of other, unrelated things struck a memory chord with me. I went and checked in our favorite complementary medicine book and found this:
Possible symptoms of a magnesium deficiency:
Blood Sugar Disorders
Bruxism
PMS
Difficulty sleeping

Mitral Valve Prolapse
Preclampsia in pregnancy
Heart Problems
Osteoporosis & other bone problems
Possible symptoms of B Vitamin deficiency:
Pantethine/Pantothenic Acid (in the B complex family)

Yeast & Chemical Sensitivities
Autoimmune disorders – allergies, asthma, lupus, psoriasis
Gout
Obesity
Cardiovascular problems
Possible indications of a Folic Acid deficiency:
IBS
Heart Disease
Depression
Tingling & numbness in legs & arms
Skin problems, including acne and psoriasis
Arthritis
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Women’s hormonal problems – “mega-folic therapy, along with the mineral boron, can delay menopause or relieve its symptoms, allowing women to halt estrogen replacement therapy entirely or reduce their prescription dosages. It can revive a depressed libido, restore menstrual regularity, and adjust hormonal imbalances.”
I can attest that a three-month regimen of the mega folic acid doses has made a huge difference in the levels of my hirsutism – see my regimen in my signature line.
This book reports success in treating both women’s hormonal problems and IBS with mega-doses of folic acid, which looked interesting to me, as it seemed that IBS was the most common other problem reported in the thread.
NOTE: As a general rule, you can’t really OD on a B vitamin, but the book notes that people who might be anemic or who need to shrink uterine fibroids, prevent breast cancer recurrences, or deal with endometriosis or fibrocystic breasts should keep supplemental folic acid below 600 mcg.
And magnesium dosage is easy to get wrong – if you want the advice on those doses, you’ll have to buy the book, because it’s long and complicated, and I don’t want to type it all. It does say, though, that taking baths/foot baths with Epsom salts will let your body absorb the magnesium it needs without the possibility of overdosing.
A lot of these same illnesses come up in the context of other complementary treatments – the ones below and several others.

At the very least, all this makes me feel like we’re not all crazy – the symptoms may be related for real, physical reasons.
