Default PCOS - Continuous bleeding since 2 yrs - Yaz

hi all,

i am a 25 yr old virgin with regular periods until the age of 23. i have been bleeding continuously for 2 years now..sometimes mild and sometimes heavy. i am 5 ' 3" tall and increased weight from 120 to 140 pounds during these 2 yrs. i tried ayurvedic and homeopathic medicines for regulating my periods but in vain. i thought it was high time and consulted an obgyn and was diagnosed with PCOS after a pelvic ultrasound. i got all the blood tests done. according to the results, I have no thyroid problem, no diabetes, no cholesterol and i am not anemic too. i only have vitamin B12 deficiency and I think my progesterone is low. i don’t have other symptoms of PCOS like excessive hair growth and acne. the obgyn said i am not ovulating and a lot of eggs are getting wasted, which might lead to premature ovarian failure (that is, early menopause due to eggs getting exhausted). and to conserve the eggs, she prescribed the BCP Yaz. she asked me to try them for 2 months to see if they work for me and see her again. i am really concerned about using this pill after reading all the side effects Yaz has caused to so many people. the doctor said that the hormonal problems my body is undergoing right now r far more worse than what the pill could cause to me. i am really against using them and want to try natural ways to stop this bleeding and get back my real periods. i am getting married to my boyfriend soon and would like to STOP this bleeding!! any thoughts on this? please help me. i am really worried and don’t understand what to do.

thanks,
shruti

That sounds awful. I think your doctor is absolutely right. I understand that you are worried about side effects, but I think you should follow her advice on this one. I had a problem with being completely anovulatory. I didn't necessarily want to start on a BCP, but my doctor's concern was that I would develop endometrial cancer if I was not routinely shedding the uterine lining. Even with diet, exercise, and Met, I never had a period. So I took my doctor's advice and started Yasmin. The only side effect I have had is headaches for a couple of days on the off week. To control that symptom, my doctor allows me to take two packs of pills before going off. Beyond the headaches, I've been very happy with the Yasmin. Birth control has its place in the treatment of this disease. Continuous bleeding cannot be a good thing. Your doctor is making a recommendation based on her knowledge and experience. But if you are unsure of her recommendation, I think you should get a second opinion. Have you discussed Metformin as a means to regulate your period? What does your doctor think is causing the excessive bleeding? Does she just think it's the hormonal effects of the PCOS or does she think there is something else going on like an endometrial problem? I'm sorry that you're having so much trouble. I hope that you're able to find effective treatment.

thanks for ur reply kayp! my dr thinks the reason for this is the hormonal imbalances. i forgot to mention earlier that my dr has asked me to take these pills continuously i.e., without taking the placebo pils in between (she gave me 2 month samples) and then see her before their completion. by the way, do u have any idea about vitex? do u think its a good idea to start taking them to regulate my periods?

Reviews on Yaz on various websites contain 90% negative reviews. i would have considered taking them without hesitation even if the reviews were 50% positive. i don't want to end up with problems more serious than PCOS

My guess is that the internet reviews of Yaz are biased. I know there are lots of people who don't respond well to all sorts of meds. But just keep in mind that most people posting on message boards about birth control or any other issue are doing so because they're having a problem. Rarely do people go on a message board to spread good news. I would not let what you've read be a major factor in your decision. If you trust your doctor, I think you're better off asking her how her patients have done on the drug and what types of complaints she's received. That's likely to be a better assessment than what you read on any message board. I think what she's been trying to tell you is that, while there are inherent risks with BCPs (like blood clots, etc.), there are much greater risks to you not getting the hormonal issue under control. You are predisposed to all of the female cancers, etc. Obviously, in her mind, the benefits of the med outweigh any risk to an otherwise healthy young woman. All of this being said, you should feel comfortable about your choice, and I think there's nothing wrong with you seeking out a second opinion if you feel it's warranted. Perhaps you should consider a referral to a reproductive endocrinologist.

As far as the vitex, I know what it is, but have never used it. I'm sure there are plenty of people on the boards who have. And again, I'm sure it works differently in different people. I have always had a preference for more traditional meds because that's what has generally worked for me. But that doesn't mean that herbal meds aren't beneficial.

Take your time and get the answers you need. In the end, sometimes you just have to pick a path and get started because there is no way to know what's going to be best for you until you try some different things. And please don't let anything you read here or on any other message board discourage you from trying something. Good luck with everything.

I was just about to say what Kay said. I was put on Yasmin to treat PCOS. My mom was very against it because I was so young and a virgin (she thought it would give me permission to have sex). After several years on it I started looking into reviews and such. I freaked myself out so badly. When I went to my Dr about it she asked me a very simple question, "Have you had a bad experience in the years you've been on it?" I never had a problem, but I didn't feel compelled to tell everyone I didn't have a problem.

I want to say she started me with 2 packs and no placebo, but I honestly can't remember. She did say I had "permission" to take up to 3 packs without placebo at a time. Your Dr. is probably skipping the placebo to get the bleeding to stop and level out your hormones.

If you trust your doctor, I would follow his/her reccommendations. If you don't feel like this is the right step for you, consult with another Dr. In the end it's important to remember that you're getting one set of information from medical professionals and another set from random people who have had bad experiences. Everyone responds differently to medications. If you do take Yaz and it doesn't work well for you, your Dr will probably try something else. My Dr. told me to expect to try 3 BCPs before finding the right one.

Good luck and congrats on the upcoming wedding!!!
