Question PCOS D&C and Hysterectomy

Hi,

I am new to the board, but I have lots of questions that I am hoping someone can answer.

Quick background: 29. Diagnosed in 1992. Have tried every med they can throw at me, twice.

I have been having my period since May 2002. My doctor is going to do a D&C with a Laparoscopy and Hysteroscopy. I am not sure what to expect from this. Will I feel better, will anything happen.

Secondly, I am going to have a Hysterectomy. The insurance requires the first surgery because of my age. Will the Hysterectomy do any good. What should I expect from that. I have this amazing dream that all the hair will fall off my face and I will loose the 75 pds that I have gained. I know that isn't realistic, but what is??

Help, I am a lost cyster for certain!

Wink been there, done that

Hi there,
I am actually recovering from the hysterectomy I got one week ago today. I have been having abnormal uterine bleeding for a long time which my doc was unable to control with bcp etc. The only thing that will change for you after the hysterectomy is that you won't bleed anymore. The hair, acne, cysts (if you keep ovaries as I have) will continue.

I also had to have the d&c hysteroscopy thing. It didn't help my bleeding. Basically what will happen is they will knock you out, open your cervix and will insert a tiny camera inside to take a look around to see if there is anything obvious in there for your doctor to see. They will then use a small instrument to scrape the lining of the uterus out. This will be sent to a lab to make sure there are no abnormal(cancerous) cells. I was feeling 100% within 2 days of this proceedure.

I am scheduled to be off work for 4 weeks for recovering from the hysterectomy. However, within 3 days I felt great. I then overdid it and felt faint so now I know to give my body time to recover.

I also have acne problems, the only thing I've found that works for me is using Differin Cream (prescription) at night and I use a sensitive skin astringent before applying makeup. This has worked very well for me. The only thing that sucks is my insurance co has decided that differin cream isn't something they want to cover anymore! Oh well, I'll pay it.

I've kind of jumped all around here, but I do wish you the best!

I had a hysterectomy last November, due to heavy and extremely painful menstrual cycles, which were caused by adenomyosis (a variation of endometriosis). All it has done, as the previous reply said, is stopped the bleeding and associated pain. (Which is great). I kept my ovaries, but it's important to remember that even if you have them removed (which may lead to some reduction in acne and hair problems, but there's no guarantee of that) you'll still have PCOS.

That's because PCOS is fundamentally a metabolic disorder, most frequently related to an imbalance in our production and use of insulin. As well as the weight/hair/acne hassles, IR can also cause heart disease, increased risk of stroke, and type II diabetes. A hyst. will not affect any of that.

It's also important to realise that even when our hormone levels are completely whacked, they are contributing some good things to our bodies. I don't know how old you are, but you might want to think carefully about the consequences of imposing surgical menopause on yourself at this time.

Having said all that, I haven't regretted my own hyst. for one moment. For more information and support, I highly recommend you visit http://www.hystersisters.com

Good luck with your decision making, and with your quest for good health.
