Hello I am new to this site. I was Ddiagnosed with PCOS January 12th and started on 1000mg met daily. (at 500mg 2x a day) I am lucky to have been blessed with 3 children of my own and a beautiful step daughter. Before my pregnancies, I was thin and had no trouble losing my weight no matter what I ate. I started AF at the early age of 8, and was regular since, every 30 days like clock work. I got pregnant 3 times and went right back to normal AF. All three pregnancies ended in pre term labor, but luckily healthy babies anyway. After my 3rd child, everything was going good until I got on the depo provera shot. Ar first it seemed like a Godsend, no more AF, it seemed so wonderful. The first year, I put on 25 lbs. The second year, I started having all of the symptoms of PCOS, although I didnt realize it then. 20 more lbs that 2nd year. No matter what, could not lose weight, started getting facial hair, hair on my head falling out...etc. 3rd year, 20 more lbs and done with the depo. I decided to switch my birth control, becasue I KNEW it was the problem. I got on the patch, and nothing changed. Now, tired all of the time, and still gaining weight, I am depressed and the rest of the symptoms getting worse. My hubby had to go to Kuwait for 6 months so I decided to off the bc all together. at this point I have not had AF in over 3 years.. no not 1. I was surprized when a week later I got AF.It was heavy and painful, but AF all the same. I was phsyced! Next month.. no AF. 6 more months, no AF. More weight gain, other symptoms still getting worse.I talked to my doc about not having AF, he put me on high dose progesterone to force it. that didnt work. THen he stared me on yaz. 3 months of yaz for bc and finally I got AF. Went to follow up where doc tells me that labs from months ago show that I am PCOS and he had never said anything!Needless to say, I am now on met having most of the horrid side effects, (nausea, diarreah, headache, fatigue ) but because of all of the wonderful cysters here, am coping and know that I will be ok. Started low carb diet, cravings diminished, feeling better about myself even with the side effects.I feel thinner, but do not have a scale anymore as the scale had started to become my enemy. I do have to wonder if I would have ever gotten PCOS if I had never tried Depo Provera and lost my periods for 3 years. Has anyone else been on Depo for bc before discovering they were PCOS?
I am completely against depo... I went on depo when I was 19.. before that I was a very nice 130lbs, size 4 athletic girl.. Never had a single health issue.. 3 months after being on it I began having heart palpitations, I gained 30lbs in 3 months, and my boobs went from a 36b to a 38 D.... I came off of it and never dropped the weight. to this day( I'm 26 now) I STILL have heart problems, weight , acne, hairloss, and god know what else.. I hate that stuff. I think its terrible!
Here is my story, and I SWEARE that the DEPO did it to me!!!!
I had normal period, I started when I was 12, I was normal then and alway through High School, I was a size 4 and 130 lbs. I went on Depo when I went to college, in 1999, I wanted to get my degree get married then have children. I was on the depo for two years, I gained 50 lbs, I never got AF while I was on it. I went to bcp when it was time for my next shot, I remained on bcp until June of 2007. After I came off bcp I never got AF. I went to an OBGYN he said pcos and put me on clomid, no tests. He did an US when I was on the clomid and 'confirmed' pcos. I was not impressed, I had NEVER heard of pcos, I went to another Dr, same thing.
I finaly got fed up with this pcos thing last month and went to an endocrinologist, she said that my symptoms didn't sound like pcos, she belives that it is my thyroid. My levels are low, but she is retesting to confirm before she starts me on meds. I also went on a Dr prescribed diet from the endo thats supose to regulate hormones.
I am still dont belive that I have pcos, I think that it was bcp and the depo. I hoped this helped.
