Default PCOS Diet, What kinds of food should I be avoiding?

Hi guys, I was recently diagnosed with PCOS so I'm new to all this. My husband and I are trying to have a child and my Dr. started me on Metformin yesterday but I want to start eating better in hopes of helping me get pregnant and overcome as much of the PCOS that I can. From what I'm reading on this site it seems that a low G.I. Diet is what is best for PCOSers. Is there a list of good foods vs bad foods, or books and free sites that you recommend? I'm already pretty thin (5'5", 115 lbs, 28yrs old) so I'm not looking to loose weight instead I want to stay lean and eat better for my PCOS condition. Any tips?!

Also, I have another question...I've alway had less hair on my arms etc and have been very thin....does this all change? It seems like most people with PCOS are overweight and have excessive amounts of hair so does that mean that I will eventually become overweight if I'm not on meds? Can I control this from not happening? Sorry, I've listed so many questions....I just feel like I don't know anything about PCOS!!

First off, welcome to the board!! Im pretty lean as well, 5'5 and weigh 127. I don't have a lot of body hair at all---I could go a week without shaving my legs and no one would even notice.

The first good thing you can do is read everything you can on here about PCOS----I have learned SO MUCH in the past few months. I have read that refined carbs are bad, like white bread, pasta and rice. Other than that I don't know much about diet.

One thing I have started to help have a baby is temping in the morning---that way I will be able to tell my doctor is Im ovulating or not. Hubby and I just started TTC as well, and it is helping me take control of a situation, you know what I mean? I am actively doing something.

Good luck to you!!

Hi Florida--welcome!

I don't think PCOS is an automatic sentence to future obesity or any of the other symptoms that can appear. There is such a wide array of symtpoms that people have or don't have that are related to PCOS, so you won't get all of the symptoms just because.
I'm thin (5'3 1/2 and 111) and my only symtoms are lack of menstruation and on my bloodwork I had high testosterone. Also, I suppose my arms are a little hairier than 'normal' but maybe not. And I'm not anticipating anything to change. I'm not planning on gaining weight or anything (I know no one 'plans' on gaining weight) but I just don't think that'll happen.

As for diet, I've also heard that a lower GI diet is preferable, but I don't eat that way--well, I guess I naturally do since I prefer brown to white rice, etc. but I don't do anything formally. You can go online and google low GI or go to you rbookstore or library--there are plenty of choices of diets and books out there.

Good luck!

Certain fats can increase insulin resistance and negatively impact fertility. Trans fats are the worst and you should completely eliminate them. Saturated fats such as cheese and red meat may contribute to IR as well.

On the other hand, fish and fish oil reduce insulin resistance. Nuts are also good for this.

Eating healthy, unrefined carbs is helpful for many..emphasize whole grains, vegetables and fruit instead of white bread and sugar. Adding in lots of vegetables and fruits (especially berries which are high in antioxidants) can also help.

Hehe, oh that was my concern too. My parents are both slim, my entire family-slim, and I'm thinking I have an illness that will make me overweight beyond my control. That was really freaking me out. But my doc said PCOS really attacks the middle section and when i do gain weight it only ever goes to my lower body so nothing is messed up there yet. I dont have a 'PCOS belly'. But as we get older, its not wise to eat eat eat anyway, regardless of PCOS or not. I am seeing another doctor in a week and I will definetly be having a whine about the possibility of gaining weight for no reason, and I'll see what he says.

Hi Florida,
I, too am thin (5'6" and 115lbs.) and the only other outward symptom I have is acne, but I have high testosterone and no cycles. I wouldn't worry about gaining weight, especially if you are eating right. I don't know if there are other this cysters out there like this also, but I CAN'T gain weight, no matter how hard I try. Anyways, we are all different. Just pay attention and read, read, read! Welcome!
