I was just thinking about how we who are all dealing with PCOS, have the same struggles, we are on constant meds, sometimes we are in pain kind of like other different types of diseases...so I'm wondering is PCOS considered a disease?
IMO it is not a disease. It is a group of "diseases" together. Meaning that if out of 10 different "diseases" (high cholestoral, cysts on ovaries, etc.) you have a certain number of these then you have PCOS.
That is my understanding. I know that someone else will have a better explaination but wanted to give you an answer.
It is a syndrome cause it is a collection of symptons. A disease they usually have one test for that will determine if you have it or not. I would say that they decided that alot of women have the same symptoms and figured out that they all had the same thing but cause it is not easy to test for they dont call it a disease. Also when you hear dieseae you think about someone who is going to die.

I believe it is considered a 'syndrome' or 'condition' because it involves ongoing symptoms for which there are no cure. It is funny though how similar it is to so many other illnesses. My DH has MS, also a chronic condition, & it is interesting how we have so many similar symptoms even though we have two very separate conditions. Like PCOS, MS has varying degrees of severity & not everyone has the same symptoms or comiplications, & some don't have any. I think chronic conditions/syndromes are so mysterious because they are so unpredictable & there is no magic test that can be done to identify them.

Some medical literature refers to it as a disease, but the defintion of PCOS is it's a syndrome. Most doctors won't refer to it as a disease, but as a collection of symptoms, a syndrome.
ohh i see, i never thought about how jenny said something about our symptoms are ongoing..it seems like it almost should be a disease IMO, but it makes sense now that its a syndrome..especially since its in the name! haha thanks for the responses
