Hi, does anyone know of any link between PCOS and food allergies or food intolerances? It seems like so many of the health problems I've had are hooked into hormone imbalance and PCOS. So I just wondered if the weird little food intolerances (potatoes, rye) I developed when my hormones were really kicking in as a teenager might be related. Has anyone else had problems with food allergies or intolerance?
Hi!
I also have a ton of annoying food intolerences....I've often wondered if it was connected to the hormone issue as well, or if I'm just *lucky* to have both. LOL.
Between the food intolerences and Metformin, my food selections are very limited. I feel like I'm eating dirt and rocks every day.
Someone once told me that I could help the food intolerences by taking digestive enzymes with my meal, but I've yet to figure out how I would do that.
Anyway, a fellow Cyster in the same boat!!!
Amanda

I'm almost sure there is a link. I am intolerant to salicylates and amines. I'm off to the allergist today to see what she has to say about all of this. But that is my thought.
I have Celiac Disease so can't have wheat, rye, barley and most oats. It's funny 'cause looking back the Celiac Disease reared it's ugly head at about the same time my periods started going all wacky. I was about 15. Hmmm....
Hello! I am new to SoulCysters and glad to be here.
I am looking for more information, if any exists, on
the link between PCOS and high fructose corn syrup.
I was diagnosed with PCOS in February 2006 but was
suffering from it for years before that. Everyone has
their own symptoms and I need to describe mine a bit
so that you can understand the point. My apologies
ahead of time for being graphic but I must be in order
to get my point across.
My symptoms involved constant bleeding. I literally
had my period almost every day of the month.
Sometimes it was only spotting and sometimes much,
much more. There were days when I could barely pick
my head up from the loss of energy.
The past few months I have begun dieting, losing
weight and really examining what I eat. I made an
interesting discovery. Whenever I eat anything
containing high fructose corn syrup or just corn syrup
I bleed immediately. I have been avoiding them the
past few weeks and my symptoms have disappeared
entirely. For the first time in a long time, I only
got my period for a couple of days in the month.
In summary, if you are suffering from PCOS you might
want to try avoiding the corn syrup. This is no easy
feat as it is everywhere. Not ingesting the substance
has helped me very much.

Yes, we avoid corn syrup. The only way it gets in our house is if they stuck it in whole wheat bread or salad dressings or ketchup. Everything else we buy I read labels well. PCOS runs heavy in our family, but as far as I know I am the only cyster in our family to avoid HFCS. I lost quite a bit of weight after starting my diet, but several other cysters in our family constantly battle obesity and other health problems. As far as I know I am the only one on any special diet for PCOS. Even those in health care (as a career) consume HFCS on a daily basis from what I understand.
Before HFCS existed ladies in our family had PCOS, back for generations (spoke with a family historian). I have no idea if they batteled obesity though. I have 2 cousins who I think have PCOS, but are not obese. One is over 40 and has never been overweight, no matter what she eats. It took her about 20 years to conceive her first child. The other cyster is still having fertility problems, but as far as I know both have never been dxed.
There used to be a thread on HFCS, but I cannot remember which board it was on. On that thread it was mentioned that dog food even has HFCS in it. That stuff is everywhere and sometimes not listed as HFCS, but as other things.
Hi ladies, it's great to have some company with this! I wonder how many of us got our food problem and our PCOS around the same time? I just started taking met; seeing what people have posted about changing appetites and digestion, I was wondering if met could help with food intolerance maybe?
brown092901, I've heard of probiotics for digestion, but not digestive enzymes. Would be cool to know more about that. Would they just be a kind of tablet? I would love to be able to eat potatoes again! I always wonder what it is about them that's bad for me too... the little waxy new ones are usually ok, but any others are no go. Weird!
bonnieboo, will be good to hear what your allergist says about all this. Keep us posted!
Welcome to CS elenip. I never heard about HFCS before. I will go look for that thread Jashobeam. Cheers for that!
My allergist and I didn't talk about PCOS, etc, today, because I am suffering hardcore outdoor allergies she wanted to deal with, stat. I am having skin testing next week, though. I will try to talk to her more about it when the results are in.

I have no idea when my food problems started. As a kid I was always overweight/obese. Caff. apparently made me testy/nervous, but didn't have me seeing spots till I guess age 30 or so. I had been off of caff. since 2002, and tried to drink some tea. It scared me to death seeing spots and it took a while for me to figure out it was the caff. I tried drinking it again on trips and realized it made me very nervous. I seem to have problems with grains, but I don't know how long that has been going on. I was only off grains from 2002 to I guess Christmas 2004 (I need to look it up). I had lost weight, and once I started eating whole grains I gained quickly. I am on Metformin, and have been for over a year.
